Who is it for?

  • Clients that want any reduction of frizz and curl
  • This service is the most customizable of all the treatment options and can get hair the “flattest” or can still leave hair with volume!
  • Safe for color-treated hair
  • This service is not recommend for clients with overly-damaged hair

How long does it last?
3-5 months, depending on hair type, lifestyle, maintenance and adherence to all aftercare instructions. Has been shown to last even up to 8 months!

What is the maintenance?

  • 72-hour waiting period before hair can be wet or washed.
  • Must avoid making any impressions on the hair with pins, clips, elastics, bands, ponytail holders, hats, sunglasses, etc for the first 72 hours.
  • Avoid using shampoos and products that contain Sodium Chloride and sodium lauryl sulfate.
  • Avoid salt water and chlorine (the ocean and swimming pools, hot tubs, etc.)
  • We recommend Bumble and Bumble’s Straight, Hairdresser’s Oil, Color Minded or Uberliss Shampoo.

What are the benefits?

  • Smoother and silkier
  • Straighter and shinier
  • Blocks the effects of humidity
  • Easier and faster to blowdry

With each treatment and with proper at-home maintenance and products, you can actually build-up the keratin on the hair strand to keep the hair even smoother over time. The Uberliss shampoo and conditioner also help build up extra keratin into the hair!

What is the cost and service time?
This service starts at $199 for the regular treatment and $249 for the Ultra. The price is increased based on the length and density of the hair; there is a density charge per ounce of extra product used.

This treatment takes approximately 2-3 hours.

Any other useful info?
We recommend getting the treatment done approximately 1-2 weeks after and 1-2 week before a color service. The cleansing shampoo can make color fade so try to plan and schedule getting your smoothing treatment 1-2 weeks before you are due for a touch-up, then we can refresh your color with your touch-up appointment!

We always highly recommend getting a hair cut since the hair does lie differently after a smoothing treatment and split ends will be much more visible.

The treatment can be done as often as every 6 weeks.

It is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. Although it has not been found to be harmful, Head Candy takes the health of our clients and their unborn/newborn children very seriously and will not take the risk!

Service Descriptions

If you’ve never had any color services, or if you’re curious about trying something new, this is a great guide to explain many of the available options, and even give some examples of what they can look like! Here at Head Candy we truly enjoy educating our clients and even offering up a whole new world of ideas & possibilities! We’re also including some frequently asked questions!

Haircuts:
Haircuts at Head Candy always include a shampoo, conditioner, scalp massage, cut & blowdry.

FAQ: “Why does a men’s cut cost less than a woman’s cut?”
To put it simply- time. Most men’s cuts will only take about 15-20 minutes and most women’s cuts will take 30-60 minutes. Men’s cuts take very little time to style, where a woman’s hair usually requires a time-consuming and labor-intensive blowout.

We also offer a cutting service that we call a “dusting”, that is around $20-25. A dusting service is for a very slight trim of only the very bottom of the hair, in addition to a chemical service. This can be done wet or dry, and only takes 10-15 minutes. Its our little way of giving our clients a break on the haircut cost when you’re already getting a few other services done.

Styles:
Blowout– includes a shampoo, conditioning, scalp massage, and blowdry styling. An iron
charge is added for flat ironing or curling when necessary.

Semi Formal– this is a quick/uncomplicated updo.

Formal– a more detailed style or updo for a special occasion like a wedding, prom, or gala. Usually requires more curling and prep work.

These images show examples of a blowout, a semi-formal style, and a formal style from left to right.

Sweet Treats:
Our deep conditioning treatments are professional only in-salon treatments used to repair damage, replenish moisture, seal the cuticle after a chemical treatment, and replace lost nutrients and proteins. After shampooing, a professional strength customized treatment is applied to the hair and is then placed under a dryer where the heat helps to drive the treatment into the inner layers of the hair. It is then rinsed, and a leave-in complex is applied before styling. We also have an amazing Bumble Color Minded treatment, that preserves hair color for up to 8 weeks! Highly recommended for vibrant colors that usually fade so quickly!

Color:
Touch-up– A touch up is when color is applied just to the root area every 4-8 weeks. This is for regular clients that consistently maintain their color and do not need the full length of hair colored. Touch-ups may at times require a glaze or refresher for the rest of the hair.

Full Color– this is for a root-to-end color application that requires more time and product. Most first time color changes require a full color application, followed by regular touch-ups.

Glaze– A glaze is a demi-permanent color that lasts 6-8 weeks and gradually washes out of the hair. We use amazing Wella Color Touch glazes that add incredible shine to the hair and offer tons of great options! They are very low maintenance, do not require a touch up, and can even blend beginning gray!

Toners– these are very similar to glazes but are not processed as long and are applied to pre-lightened or highlighted hair.

Previously colored hair with a desire to go lighter requires that the hair is first prelightened. This would be considered a color correction service and a consultation is highly recommended.

From left to right- a full color application was needed for this first client to cover her gray and match from roots to ends. The middle picture shows how amazing a glaze can be! The picture on the right is a toner applied over the highlights to get a soft champagne blonde.

Highlights:
Accent– just a few highlights (usually 10 foils or less). Accent highlights are an amazing way to change or update your color in a really affordable way. You can add a few highlights just around the face to accentuate a new cut, or add a panel of a bright fun color! An accent highlight and touch up or glaze is our most popular combination!

Partial– a very popular service for adding a half-head of highlights.

Full Highlight– this is where the entire head is highlighted. Used for going all-over lighter or adding interest and dimension when needing a full color change.

Balayage– this is a very advanced technique and is extremely popular with most celebrities for the amazing sun-kissed look. Balayage is a technique of sweeping or painting color onto the hair without the use of foils and requires a lot of advanced education. It is a French term, meaning “to sweep” and several of our stylists are masters at this technique!

Ombre– one of the hottest color trends of the last few years and it looks like its here to stay! Ombre is also a very advanced technique of gradually blending from one color to another from the roots to the ends. We have a ton of experience achieving this very popular color look!

All of these highlighting techniques can be used to achieve the most subtle to the very boldest of colors and looks. An accent can add a bright pop of fuschia, or just a few soft, sunkissed highlights around the face. Every client gets a completely customized technique and application specifically for the looks they want to achieve. Consultations are always free and are given to every client to ensure we are providing exactly what your hair needs!

FAQ: What are lowlights and how are they different from highlights?
Lowlights is just a term used to describe adding a darker color to the hair in a dimensional pattern the same way as a highlight is added in a lighter color. Many times a combination of highlights and lowlights are added to give more dimension to hair, or lowlights are added to hair that has become overall too light or washed out.

All 3 of these images show different examples of how accent and partial highlights can give different looks with just a few highlights! Left to right: the first pic is an accent highlight panel toned in a bright green. The second is of a soft accent highlight with a glaze to blend in gray with a very subtle look. The third is a partial highlight to give great dimension to a warm chocolate brown!

Here are examples of 3 completely different looks, all achieved with a partial or full highlight. The first is a full highlight used to lighten the clients overall look, and then toned with a softer, more subtle caramel color. The second pic is a highlight added before an all-over bright red is applied to give a super hot vibrant look. The third is a full highlight and lowlight with a glaze to correct the clients bad haircolor.

Here are examples of the amazing possibilities that can be achieved with some of our more modern and advanced techniques! The first is a partial highlight toned with several different blue and violet tones. The second is a 2-part highlight technique where the hair is first pre-lightened in highlights, and then highlighted again with different tones of reds, coppers, and violet. The third is an amazing ombre transformation done on beautiful long hair.

Texture:
Wave or Curl– Gone are the days of the old-fashioned “perms” and here to stay are the many more modern techniques used to add volume, wave and curl to hair!

Keratin Express & Keratin Treatments– Used to smooth curl, tame frizz, and control wave, keratin treatments offer amazing results for clients with troublesome hair. Find out more on our page devoted to these incredible Keratin Smoothing Services!

Price Variations Explained:
When you see a “starting at” or variation of prices listed with each service, that is because the prices vary according to level of the stylist. At Head Candy, we have 4 different levels of stylists, along with 3 different levels of trainees. Here is a quick breakdown of our different levels:

Assistant– we have a strong assistant trainee program and train our assistants on every area of the salon business including shampooing, cleanliness, color, cutting, running the front desk, consultations, styling, and everything else that they will need to become successful in this field. All trainees start out as an assistant and learn to master their craft before moving up the ladder. This can take anywhere from 1-2 years. We often have our assistants apply color and glazes for us with our supervision so they can get real hands-on experience while we watch to make sure that they’re techniques are up to our desired level. We are a teaching and mentoring salon and most of our clients thoroughly enjoy being part of the coaching process!

Trainee– once the assistants start mastering the craft of hairdressing and show the amazing drive, motivation, and determination needed in this field, they can then move up to a trainee position and start taking clients on specified days and hours. Their prices are much less than a stylist since they are still in the learning phase of their career. We often have workshops and use volunteers, charging a small fee for products. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for upcoming workshops and classes if you’d like to volunteer!

Junior Stylist– this is the final level of our Assistant training program. Trainees get 1-2 days to be behind the chair as a stylist, while still working as an assistant a few days per week. They get to start taking on actual clients under the supervision of our trainers to coach them into being amazing successful stylists. They stay in this level while building up their books. The faster they build, the faster they get to be a stylist and not an assistant!

Top Stylist– these are stylists with at least 2-3 years of styling experience and are in the beginning stages of building a following. Often times stylists that leave the area or the industry for any amount of time and return to a stylist position will need to start back at this level to rebuild their following. The starting prices that you see listed are the prices for Top Stylists. Haircuts are $35, touch-ups are $40, etc. Once they build up their following and reach a number of predetermined goals for a set time period, they can then move up to the next level.

Senior Stylist– Seniors have at least 3-5 years of styling experience and are still in the intermediary stages of building a following. They have either started as a Top stylist and worked their way up, or they have come to our salon with a small client following. Most prices for Senior stylists are $5-10 above the starting prices listed. Haircuts with a Senior are $40, touch-ups are $45, etc.

Master Stylist– these stylists have at least 5-10 years of experience and are in the more advanced stage of building a following. Most have come to our salon with a large client following with prices similar to ours at this level. They are the more in-demand stylists and their prices are $10-15 higher than our starting prices. Haircuts with a Master are $45, touch-ups are $50, etc.

Master+ and Director Stylists- these stylists have 10+ years of experience and have a large client following. Most have come to our salon with a large following and their prices are at the top levels of our menu. Master+ and Director stylists haircuts are $55, touch-ups are $50, etc. These stylists are in high-demand and have tons of experience in the field.

All of the stylists here at Head Candy are selected by the owner based on their talent, skill level, experience, professionalism, creativity, and passion for our industry. You don’t ever have to question or worry about the level of skill of our stylists. Unfortunately in this industry, there are tons of salons out there that hire beginning stylists that just don’t have the experience. Head Candy is NOT one of those salons! Every stylist at every level in our salon is truly talented, and was hand-selected by the owner to be the best in the area. If you’re on a tight budget and still want exceptional work at really affordable prices, we suggest asking for a Top or Senior stylist. You can’t go wrong here!

We hope this guide helped you to get a better understanding of the services available, as well as the prices on our menu. As always if you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Top Ten Myths vs Truths About Hair

Top 10 Myths vs Truths About Hair

We made a list of the ten most common hair questions that we hear from our clients on a daily basis here at Head Candy and we wanted to take some time to clear things up! Here is our top 10 list!

10. Hair must be washed every day.tonic

MYTH! While bathing or showering every day is certainly a great idea, we do not recommend washing your hair every day! Three times per week is plenty but every other day is just fine as well. Don’t forget that hair is a fiber much like wool or silk. Think about that comfy wool sweater you have that starts to look worse and worse with every washing. If you have long, thick, coarse, or curly hair you can go even longer in-between washings. These hair textures tend to dry out and become frizzy due to lack of moisture. If you have an oily scalp, make sure you are using the proper shampoo that is meant to correct any scalp or oily issues and try to retrain your scalp by washing every other day. We love Bumble & Bumble Tonic shampoo for any oily or itchy scalp problems!

9. Trimming your ends will make your hair grow faster.masque

MYTH! Typical hair grows about ½” per month and trimming your ends won’t make your hair grow any faster. We still suggest getting regular trims to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy, but the only real factors that affect hair growth are genetics, hormones, diet, and the overall health of your scalp and hair follicles. To keep your ends from getting split or broken, avoid using heat from irons and blow dryers. If you do use heat on your ends regularly we recommend using products that protect your hair from those elements and doing shampooa regular moisturizing treatment to keep in good condition. Bumble and Bumble Quenching line is amazing for keeping your hair moisturized and there are quite a few great styling products that do double duty of helping to style and protect your hair from heat. When trying to grow hair, we love the Revita shampoo and conditioner to keep your scalp and follicles at their optimum levels.

8. You can’t get your hair colored during pregnancy.

MYTH! Head Candy is always concerned with what our pregnant and nursing clients are exposed to in the salon but no studies have ever proven that hair color is dangerous for a developing fetus. We only use the highest quality hair color in our salon and all of the services we provide are completely free of formaldehyde. Please be sure to inform your stylist if you are pregnant and all of your concerns will be addressed. There are still plenty of options available, including our amazing Wella color glazes, which are perfectly safe for everyone and they are totally ammonia-free!

7. Wearing ponytails will cause premature baldness.home_display

TRUE! This may be surprising to most people but this is somewhat true! While an occasional ponytail won’t cause any harm, frequent super tight ponytails could lead to traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss caused by stress, tension, and regular pulling of the scalp and hair fibers. This type of alopecia can happen to anyone but is more common among women of color who wear their hair pulled tightly in braids, ponytails and extensions. Even parting your hair the same way for a long time can cause the part to widen which is another form of traction alopecia. The same goes for headbands, rollers, and excessive heat. Try using less tension in your ponytail and changing the way you part your hair every few weeks. And don’t forget to take your stylist’s advice on changing styles and shampoo and product recommendations!

6. Washing hair in cold water will make it shinier.shine

MYTH! Hair does not actually contain any living cells so it does not react to hot or cold water. The myth comes from the belief that cold water will make the cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair close so that it lays flat and helps to reflect light. Cold water will not close the cuticle layer of the hair- that requires a pH balancer to restore the hair to its most natural pH level. Many of the in-salon services can close down that cuticle layer, including toners, glazes, and several conditioning treatments. If you’re looking to add shine to your hair, we recommend getting a Wella glaze or glossing service which can even be done in a totally clear formula if you don’t want to change the color of your hair. We also love Bumble and Bumble “Let it Shine” shampoo and conditioner for at home use to get your hair extra shiny!

5. Hair loss and baldness comes from the Mother’s side.revita

MYTH! You can still blame your maternal grandfather for some of your hair loss but he can no longer take all of the blame! Research has shown approximately 200 different genes that regulate hair growth, coming from both sides of the family. There are also many other reasons why we lose our hair or go bald including diet, environment, sun damage, hormones, and several others. At the first sign of hair loss you need to start a regimen of using shampoo, conditioner and treatments specifically designed to help keep the hair that you have and prevent further loss. We carry the Revita line of products that are 100% guaranteed by the manufacturer. And talk to your stylist about the best ways to care for your hair and scalp.

4. Exposing your hair to sunlight is the best way to get natural highlights or lighten your hair.B1CK_152x358

MYTH! This is a total myth! UV rays are just as damaging to hair as they are to our skin! Those powerful UV rays can cause hair to lighten, but can also cause your hair to fade and can burn your scalp! Hair is not a shield or protective barrier between the damaging sun and your sensitive scalp. With so many safe and affordable ways to lighten up or add eye-catching highlights to your hair, don’t risk the permanent damage that can be caused by the sun! Instead, opt for a subtle accent highlight that starts at just $20 and take home the amazing Bumble and Bumble Color Minded products with UV protection!

3. Your eyebrows should be the same color as your hair.

MYTH! The most natural look is for eyebrows to be 1-2 levels darker than the hair on your head. While you certainly can color your eyebrows to closely match your hair color, keep in mind that our eyebrows shed about twice as fast as the time needed for a root touch up. Most touch-ups are done every 4-5 weeks but eyebrows will need touched up in about 2 weeks. Even platinum blondes shouldn’t lighten their brows too much or you’d end up looking like you don’t have any brows at all! Keep your brows a bit darker and instead opt for filling in brows with a lighter colored pencil or powder.

2. If you’re planning to wear an updo for a special event, your hair should be slightly dirty.weddings

MYTH! This statement may cause many debates, even among different stylists and so-called magazine experts but at Head Candy we say it is a myth that dirty hair works best for formal styling! The main problem with this statement is that nearly every person has a different definition of the word “dirty”. Even though freshly washed and conditioned hair tends to be too soft for the texture and grip needed for doing a formal style or updo, we would rather just add that grip ourselves with products. We have no idea what products you are using at home and unfortunately most non-professional products are not meant to be layered. They can cause flakes or white spots when brushed out or touched with a hot iron. Once that happens there is no way of fixing it except to wash the hair, which then adds on a blowdry service at a cost of $30 & up, and adds an extra 30-45 minutes to the service time. We have the most amazing Bumble and Bumble products which stand the test of time all while layering, applying heat, and brushing backstage at NY Fashion Week and through countless shows and photo shoots. Most non-professional products can’t do the things that our products can do, which is why we use them. We are professionals that know how to make hair do what we need it to do. So we recommend coming to your updo appointment with clean dry hair. Use very little conditioner so your hair isn’t too soft, but leave the other products to us!

1. I Wouldn’t Look Good with Short Hair.

MYTH! There are so many different styles nowadays that anyone would look great with shorter hair! We just love when celebrities help to inspire our clients by cutting off their hair and sporting those modern, hip, and super sexy pixie cuts! When you have a great stylist you can easily trust them with helping you choose a short crop that would suit you perfectly. Be sure to start saving pictures of all the short styles you crave so we can get an idea of exactly what you’re looking for. Take the time to ask lots of questions and pay attention to the styling and products used to go with your new do. Whether you decide to go gradually shorter or just take the plunge and get a dramatic new makeover, we know you’ll love the freedom and ease of a great new short haircut!

Let’s chat about hair color

This color post is all about 2 of the most popular color trends of the moment- Ombre and Bronde!

Ombre

Ombre perfection achieved by JohnEveryone is still in love with ombre and Head Candy has this hot color trend mastered!

Whether you’re looking for the stronger lines of the dip-dye or you want the subtle toned sun-kissed look, we’ve got you covered.

Head on over to our client before & after page for inspiration, bring in your own pictures of looks you love, or check out this article from Glamour Magazine.

“Bronde”

Fab champagne blonde highlights and cut by RachelBronde is that perfectly subtle shade between being blonde and brunette. It has great soft dimension and is much more suitable than trying to be ultra light blonde when you have naturally darker hair.

The look works well on clients with light brown to dark blonde hair. We suggest a partial highlight with subtle weaving in the crown area, graduating to a larger weave around the face. We would then apply a Wella glaze in a cool light blonde shade, and finish with a trim of the ends followed by a Bumble and Bumble Mending Masque conditioning treatment to seal in the color, close down the cuticle, and add shine.

This look also works really well as a way to blend in and camouflage graying hair. We recommend re-booking this appointment every 8-10 weeks. Have more gray to camouflage? Change the glaze over to a permanent color and rebook your appointment every 4-6 weeks.

Don’t forget that consultations are always free and if you’re thinking of a big change we are more than happy to discuss your options with you!
