Fall Winter Head Candy Collection The 50’s

Several times every year the entire staff gets together to work on a new collection, and it is hard to believe that this is only our 2nd full collection together! I spend a few weeks carefully thinking about a theme that will not only inspire the entire staff, but will also inspire our clients, and will showcase the team’s talents, along with the ability to display the latest trends in cut, color, and styling. I announce the theme at our twice-yearly team meeting, and have everyone draw names to choose their teammates. The staff knows there is always a method to my madness, and I like having them choose teammates randomly so they get the opportunity to work with new people on a regular basis. It is great for moral and team building, and helps everyone to learn and grow by constantly working with different people.

The theme this time was vintage styles. We randomly chose decades from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and gave them a “Candy Remix” or a modern update. Since vintage styles are always coming back around again, I thought it would be a fun way for the team to put their own personal twist on updating these classics with a more modern edge using today’s techniques. We get so many requests for vintage styling, especially for weddings, and there seems to be a major surge of vintage adoration everywhere we look. With shows like Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Masters of Sex, and Downton Abbey, everyone seems to be longing for more simple times and classic beauty.

This time I called in Danielle Lambersky, a very special makeup artist that I’ve worked with on several projects before. She is amazingly talented and I absolutely adore her! I also decided to work with Jillian Goodman of Jillian Kathryn Photography for our third project together, since we seem to be making such an amazing team!

We hope you love these vintage inspirations as much as we do and our Candy Remixes on the classics! We work hard to not just stay on top of the latest trends, but to also help start the next hottest trends to keep all of you ahead of the game! We absolutely love what we do and it wouldn’t be possible without you and your support!

Finally it is the last in our collection– The 50’s! We would also like to give a big shoutout to Nick Grice over at Nordstrom’s in Cherry Hill for help in styling the 1950’s collection! He did a great job helping us find wardrobe for this collection!

The 50’s

Hair: Robin Dorton & Kristin Pellegrino
Models: Allie Robinson, Jessica Minton, Brendan Moffat

The 1950’s were booming. Booming economy, babies were booming and the new suburbs were booming. Elvis was King, James Dean was our hero, and Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe won our hearts on the big screen. Circle skirts with soft sweaters, wool coats, Levi’s and the classic white tee were the favorites of fashion, with perfectly coifed updo’s and roller set styles keeping women looking their best while they kept the house clean and the tummies full. But life wasn’t all poodle skirts and sock hops. Rosa Parks made history in the 50’s, while paving the way for Civil Rights. The Cold War threatened our way of life and communists were not to be trusted. Yet with all that is happening in today’s society and the global threats we see on the news every night, wouldn’t it be so  peachy to just get dolled up and head to the drive in for a soda pop with James, Audrey, and Marilyn?

Jess (Marilyn Monroe Remix)Jess before and after 1a web

Kristin decided that a modern day Marilyn wouldn’t just be a normal platinum blonde, but to give her a real Head Candy remix, she would have to be more of a Rose Gold with light violet accents! She prelightened her hair and then toned her with a custom mixed toner for that perfect modern rose-violet platinum! Her styling was kept more classic, close to the original, but with more modern movement and softer curls. We love the results!

Allie before and after 1 web

Allie (Audrey Hepburn Remix)

Robin loved Allie’s look from the second she first saw her picture, and just knew that she would make the perfect modern day Audrey! She is cute as a button and an absolute sweetheart so she fit the role perfectly! Robin thought that a more updated Audrey wouldn’t just have solid dark brown hair, but would probably love the uber modern balayage highlights that all the darker-haired celebrities are wearing now. So she hand-painted lots of balayage highlights around Allie’s face and crown area, toning with a rich warm medium brown for a perfect sun-kissed look! Then she cut the dead ends off the bottom and gave her long layers with a straight razor cut with plenty of face-framing to really open up space and add lots of movement to the hair.

Brendan (James Dean Remix)

It’s not often that you put a call out for a male model that can pull of playing the role of an icon like James Dean, while being open enough to let you have your way with his hair. For several months Robin looked everywhere. She searched through her network of models, contacted a few local agencies and photographers, sent a mass text out to everyone she knew, and came up with nothing. Then one day she called her husband at work and told him to check out all the servers at his restaurant and see if anyone could possibly fit the bill. He sent a picture of Brendan and that was that. Not only does he obviously have those rugged good looks, but he also let her cut his hair any way she needed to for this photo shoot. He turned out to be the perfect model for this role, and we are quite sure you will be seeing his face again in future shoots here at Head Candy, and possibly other places too. A star just might’ve been born!

We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane! Enjoy the rest of your stay at the soda counter!!

Only 2 more to go! Now is the 60’s!

The 60’s

Hair: Melissa Kenny and Jamie Tate
Models: Crystal, Sarah, Greg and Ryan

The assassinations of both President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Vietnam war, Civil Rights for African Americans, women, and gays were all part of the radical 1960’s. Hippies wanted peace and free love, women wanted equal pay, minorities wanted equal treatment. We had Janis Joplin, The Doors, Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix giving us unheard of music that still stirs something in our souls. Flower power and the smiley face were found on everything. Elvis and The Beatles had millions of women screaming and passing out. In the summer of 1969, more than 400,000 hopeful people trooped to upstate NY to be part of a harmonious 3-days known as Woodstock. Throw on your finest fringe vest and put a flower in your hair as you groove along this peaceful journey!

We will be counting down the newest collection from the 90’s to the 50’s. So check back with us every few weeks to see the next decade in our trip down memory lane! First up is the 90’s!

The 90’s

Hair: Alexis Jimenez and Payal Surti
Models: Brian and Sommer

It may seem hard to believe that the 1990’s can even be considered a vintage decade, but it is indeed true that some of these trends are already 24 years old!

Music from N’SYNC, Backstreet Boys, MC Hammer, Courtney & Kurt, the Spice Girls & Britney Spears gave us a wide range of music from mainstream pop to dark and edgy grunge rock. Movies and TV including Friends, 90210, Clueless, Fresh Prince, and Saved by the Bell started the style trends that influenced millions around the world. We all wore those low crotch Hammer pants, overalls with one strap undone, bright patterns, and a few of us even wore our pants backwards to be like a pair of very young rapping one-hit-wonders. If you didn’t wear your hair in twisties or scrunchies, have the “Rachel haircut”, or a massive collection of butterfly clips and Pogs, you weren’t living in the 90’s!

Check back with us in a few weeks to see the 80’s in our next trip down memory lane!

Top Ten List of Foods and Vitamins for Healthy Hair

Clients are always asking if there are any magic vitamins that will help with growing healthy, beautiful hair. Of course, there’s more to hair health than just taking a vitamin! A healthy lifestyle, following your stylist’s advice for proper hair care and products, and getting enough sleep can all do wonders for your hair. And to go along with that, here is our Top Ten List of foods and vitamins that can help give you that great hair and skin you long for!

1. SalmonOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Salmon is rich in protein, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. About 3% of the hair shaft is made up of these fatty acids, which your body can’t make, and which you need to grow hair. They also keep your scalp and hair hydrated! Trout, avocado, and pumpkin seeds can also give you these amazing fatty acids!

2. WalnutsWalnuts
These are the only type of nut that contain a large amount of those essential omega-3 fatty acids. Even better, they are rich in biotin and vitamin E. Vitamin E is a great protector from DNA damage, and sun damage. Use walnut oil in your salad dressing as an easy way to ensure getting it into your diet!

3. ZincZinc
Having a lack of zinc in your diet can lead to hair loss, along with a dry scalp. It can also be a great help for dandruff and psoriasis sufferers. You can take a supplement for zinc, or you can add foods rich in zinc into your diet like oysters, cereals, nuts, and eggs.

4. Beta CaroteneSweet Potatoes
Beta Carotene is a much needed antioxidant which your body turns into vitamin A. It helps your scalp produce the oils used to protect and nourish your hair. Being low in vitamin A can lead to a dry, flaky scalp. Foods rich in beta carotene include sweet potatoes, carrots, mangoes and pumpkin.

5. Eggseggs
Not only are eggs a great source of protein, but they are also full of a few other minerals that are key to maintaining hair and skin health. They are rich in zinc, and also in iron, which helps carry oxygen to the hair follicles. Too little iron, also known as anemia, is a major cause of hair loss in women.

6. Dark, leafy greenskale
Spinach, kale, and broccoli are all rich in iron, beta carotene, folate and vitamin C, which helps to keep hair follicles healthy and helps with scalp oils for hydrating the hair.

7. Lentilslentils
Lots of vegetarians and vegans know about the amazing health benefits of these legumes. They’re a major source of protein for those that don’t eat meat, but they are also rich in iron, zinc, and biotin- all essential to healthy hair and scalp! You can also try adding edamame and kidney beans to get all of these great nutrients.

8. Vitamin B Complexgreek-yogurt
You may see this ingredient in a lot of hair care products, for the wonders that it does for the health of the hair follicle. You can find vitamin B5 in a lot of dairy products, like Greek yogurt, cheese, and milk, which also contain protein and vitamin D. Vitamin B Complex contains every vitamin B available, including B6, B12, and Biotin. They help reduce hair loss, slow down graying process, and promote shiny hair.

9. Vitamin Cblue
This vitamin is critical for circulation, and supports blood vessels that feed your hair follicles. Not having enough vitamin C in your diet can lead to hair being fragile or breaking. Try adding more blueberries, tomatoes, and strawberries to you diet to get plenty of vitamin C.

10. Vitamin Avitamin-a_2
This may be the most essential vitamin for optimum hair and scalp health. This is one vitamin that is easiest to get your daily allowance by taking a supplement. Vitamin A adds conditioners to the scalp, it fights free radicals like pollution that weaken hair, and it strengthens hair strands.

Natrol Biotin Maximum Strength and Viviscal both contain many different nutrients viviscal_box_350w 20120206_170that help with hair and skin health. They are an easy way to add a supplement to a healthy diet that can give you a good all-around assortment of the essentials needed every day. Both can be found at most health-food stores, pharmacies, or online.

Top Ten List of Hair Myths and Truths

Top 10 Myths vs Truths About Hairtop 10 myths

We made a list of the ten most common hair questions that we hear from our clients on a daily basis here at Head Candy and we wanted to take some time to clear things up! Here is our top 10 list!

10. Hair must be washed every day.tonic

MYTH! While bathing or showering every day is certainly a great idea, we do not recommend washing your hair every day! Three times per week is plenty but every other day is just fine as well. Don’t forget that hair is a fiber much like wool or silk. Think about that comfy wool sweater you have that starts to look worse and worse with every washing. If you have long, thick, coarse, or curly hair you can go even longer in-between washings. These hair textures tend to dry out and become frizzy due to lack of moisture. If you have an oily scalp, make sure you are using the proper shampoo that is meant to correct any scalp or oily issues and try to retrain your scalp by washing every other day. We love Bumble & Bumble Tonic shampoo for any oily or itchy scalp problems!

9. Trimming your ends will make your hair grow faster.masque

MYTH! Typical hair grows about ½” per month and trimming your ends won’t make your hair grow any faster. We still suggest getting regular trims to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy, but the only real factors that affect hair growth are genetics, hormones, diet, and the overall health of your scalp and hair follicles. To keep your ends from getting split or broken, avoid using heat from irons and blow dryers. If you do use heat on your ends regularly we recommend using products that protect your hair from those elements and doing shampooa regular moisturizing treatment to keep in good condition. Bumble and Bumble Quenching line is amazing for keeping your hair moisturized and there are quite a few great styling products that do double duty of helping to style and protect your hair from heat. When trying to grow hair, we love the Revita shampoo and conditioner to keep your scalp and follicles at their optimum levels.

8. You can’t get your hair colored during pregnancy.

MYTH! Head Candy is always concerned with what our pregnant and nursing clients are exposed to in the salon but no studies have ever proven that hair color is dangerous for a developing fetus. We only use the highest quality hair color in our salon and all of the services we provide are completely free of formaldehyde. Please be sure to inform your stylist if you are pregnant and all of your concerns will be addressed. There are still plenty of options available, including our amazing Wella color glazes, which are perfectly safe for everyone and they are totally ammonia-free!

7. Wearing ponytails will cause premature baldness.home_display

TRUE! This may be surprising to most people but this is somewhat true! While an occasional ponytail won’t cause any harm, frequent super tight ponytails could lead to traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss caused by stress, tension, and regular pulling of the scalp and hair fibers. This type of alopecia can happen to anyone but is more common among women of color who wear their hair pulled tightly in braids, ponytails and extensions. Even parting your hair the same way for a long time can cause the part to widen which is another form of traction alopecia. The same goes for headbands, rollers, and excessive heat. Try using less tension in your ponytail and changing the way you part your hair every few weeks. And don’t forget to take your stylist’s advice on changing styles and shampoo and product recommendations!

6. Washing hair in cold water will make it shinier.shine

MYTH! Hair does not actually contain any living cells so it does not react to hot or cold water. The myth comes from the belief that cold water will make the cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair close so that it lays flat and helps to reflect light. Cold water will not close the cuticle layer of the hair- that requires a pH balancer to restore the hair to its most natural pH level. Many of the in-salon services can close down that cuticle layer, including toners, glazes, and several conditioning treatments. If you’re looking to add shine to your hair, we recommend getting a Wella glaze or glossing service which can even be done in a totally clear formula if you don’t want to change the color of your hair. We also love Bumble and Bumble “Let it Shine” shampoo and conditioner for at home use to get your hair extra shiny!

5. Hair loss and baldness comes from the Mother’s side.revita

MYTH! You can still blame your maternal grandfather for some of your hair loss but he can no longer take all of the blame! Research has shown approximately 200 different genes that regulate hair growth, coming from both sides of the family. There are also many other reasons why we lose our hair or go bald including diet, environment, sun damage, hormones, and several others. At the first sign of hair loss you need to start a regimen of using shampoo, conditioner and treatments specifically designed to help keep the hair that you have and prevent further loss. We carry the Revita line of products that are 100% guaranteed by the manufacturer. And talk to your stylist about the best ways to care for your hair and scalp.

4. Exposing your hair to sunlight is the best way to get natural highlights or lighten your hair.B1CK_152x358

MYTH! This is a total myth! UV rays are just as damaging to hair as they are to our skin! Those powerful UV rays can cause hair to lighten, but can also cause your hair to fade and can burn your scalp! Hair is not a shield or protective barrier between the damaging sun and your sensitive scalp. With so many safe and affordable ways to lighten up or add eye-catching highlights to your hair, don’t risk the permanent damage that can be caused by the sun! Instead, opt for a subtle accent highlight that starts at just $20 and take home the amazing Bumble and Bumble Color Minded products with UV protection!

3. Your eyebrows should be the same color as your hair.

MYTH! The most natural look is for eyebrows to be 1-2 levels darker than the hair on your head. While you certainly can color your eyebrows to closely match your hair color, keep in mind that our eyebrows shed about twice as fast as the time needed for a root touch up. Most touch-ups are done every 4-5 weeks but eyebrows will need touched up in about 2 weeks. Even platinum blondes shouldn’t lighten their brows too much or you’d end up looking like you don’t have any brows at all! Keep your brows a bit darker and instead opt for filling in brows with a lighter colored pencil or powder.

2. If you’re planning to wear an updo for a special event, your hair should be slightly dirty.weddings

MYTH! This statement may cause many debates, even among different stylists and so-called magazine experts but at Head Candy we say it is a myth that dirty hair works best for formal styling! The main problem with this statement is that nearly every person has a different definition of the word “dirty”. Even though freshly washed and conditioned hair tends to be too soft for the texture and grip needed for doing a formal style or updo, we would rather just add that grip ourselves with products. We have no idea what products you are using at home and unfortunately most non-professional products are not meant to be layered. They can cause flakes or white spots when brushed out or touched with a hot iron. Once that happens there is no way of fixing it except to wash the hair, which then adds on a blowdry service at a cost of $30 & up, and adds an extra 30-45 minutes to the service time. We have the most amazing Bumble and Bumble products which stand the test of time all while layering, applying heat, and brushing backstage at NY Fashion Week and through countless shows and photo shoots. Most non-professional products can’t do the things that our products can do, which is why we use them. We are professionals that know how to make hair do what we need it to do. So we recommend coming to your updo appointment with clean dry hair. Use very little conditioner so your hair isn’t too soft, but leave the other products to us!

1. I Wouldn’t Look Good with Short Hair.

MYTH! There are so many different styles nowadays that anyone would look great with shorter hair! We just love when celebrities help to inspire our clients by cutting off their hair and sporting those modern, hip, and super sexy pixie cuts! When you have a great stylist you can easily trust them with helping you choose a short crop that would suit you perfectly. Be sure to start saving pictures of all the short styles you crave so we can get an idea of exactly what you’re looking for. Take the time to ask lots of questions and pay attention to the styling and products used to go with your new do. Whether you decide to go gradually shorter or just take the plunge and get a dramatic new makeover, we know you’ll love the freedom and ease of a great new short haircut!

Spring Collection 2014

Welcome to Head Candy’s first full collection for Spring 2014!

Our entire staff got together in January for a full day of makeovers to present our favorite cuts, colors, and styles for Spring. We assembled into 4 teams and each team chose a candy as inspiration for the looks. It was an amazing day full of hard work, team building, creativity, and a showcase of the awesome talent that works here at Head Candy. We also wanted to give a big thanks to Chrissi, who did all of the makeup for every model in our photo shoot! We truly hope you enjoy our portfolio as much as we enjoyed assembling it for you!

Butterscotchbutterscotch1

Team Butterscotch features the work of Kristin and Payal. For their color makeover, they lightened the model to a pale blonde and added lowlights in soft butterscotch and golden tones for depth and dimension. They finished with her cut by transforming it into a trendy short pixie with plenty of textureJanet Makeover! For their men’s look they did a super short classic fade with a defined side part, which is right on trend for 2014! It has a hint of that great vintage look that’s highly requested in the salon right now. The Butterscotch updo is their version of an updated 1940’s look with classic pin curls and Victory Rolls to coordinate with her adorable polka-dot dress! Nice job Payal & Kristin!

Candy Barcandybar2

The Candy Bar team features Alexis, Christina & Melissa. For their color makeover, they added slices of caramel highlights with great placement to really stand out when the hair is parted to the side. They also added a beautiful new chocolate base color to the hair adding amazing shine and rich dimension. They also styled her into a classic updo for the finished look, with a few soft tendrils to frame her face. Candy Bar Makeover For their men’s look they prelightened his mohawk section, toning it to a rich caramel color to really make it stand out against his natural dark base color. Bumble’s Sumotech was used to finish the style into a textured short faux hawk!

Nerdsnerds1

Team Nerds features the work of John and Rachel. For their color makeover, they lightened the model to a pale blonde and added multiple colors of highlights in lots of candy colors. They also gave her a new shorter classic bob cut with lots of soft layers for movement. Cotton Candycottoncandy1

Team Cotton Candy features the work of Robin and Tronisha. They loved the idea of choosing Cotton Candy to feature the exaggerated texture they could get with natural curly hair, while having the opportunity to use lots of the soft pastel and candy colors that are so trendy right now in the salon, and all over the world!

For Robin’s first color makeover on Jess, the entire head was prelightened to pale blonde. Jess makeoverShe then added slices going around the head in pinks, purples, candy greens, and blues. The roots were toned to a lavendar, while the midlengths and ends were toned to a pale blonde with a hint of lavendar. She then gave Jess ultra-chic blunt bangs and a new bob, with a few long tendrils hanging over for interest.

For Tronisha’s color makeover on Gabby, she Gab makeoverprelightened her existing dark roots, pulling the lightener through the rest of the hair for the last few minutes of processing time in order to get rid of the unwanted brassy yellow tones. She then weaved different shades of purples, blues, and slate grays through her new bangs, while toning the rest of the hair to a soft pale blonde with a subtle hint of violet. She played with different textures on her styling, giving her smooth and sleek bangs with full blown out volume on the rest!

Eyebrow Matters

Your eyebrows are one of the most important focal features of your face so we’re devoting a blog entirely to this topic! We’re including some eyebrow do’s and don’ts, some examples of eyebrows gone bad, some eyebrow before and after makeovers, and some expert tips for getting and maintaining your perfect eyebrows! We’ve even included some advice for men’s eyebrows too! And just to show you how serious we are about helping you with your eyebrow matters, we will be offering a free eyebrow shaping, waxing, or threading for the entire month of February with Chrissi or Payal!

We’ve all seen our fair share of bad eyebrows; too thick, too thin, too dark, too high, too joey2low, barely there, and the list goes on. Unfortunately, many of us have experienced bad eyebrows ourselves. That time when you ran into that cheap place around the corner and walked out with a big gap or even worse, a burn! Oh and let’s not forget that hilarious episode of Friends when Joey decided to try out some waxing and ended up looking, well, you remember!

joey

Poor Joey, taking the advice of his agent, is the perfect example of eyebrows gone terribly wrong!
First, let’s talk about bad eyebrows. Back in the 1920’s and 30’s, the super-thin, overly high arches were the style, but modern times call for a more natural brow. Your face shape is going to help determine the shape of your eyebrows but you don’t want to stray too far away from your natural thickness and natural arch. Its all about emphasizing your natural beauty and features. Square face shapes can round the brow arch slightly to soften features, and a round face can go slightly higher with the arch to add length. Small changes to natural shapes are perfectly fine, but should be left to the professionals.

Here’s a list of 3 Eyebrow Don’ts:

1. Don’t Over Pluck!bad2
Step away from the tweezers! Overplucking is one of the biggest mistakes you can make with your brows. As you age your brows tend to thin out, making it even more difficult to grow back those gaps in your brow shape. Leave the original shaping to the pro and just clean up around the outside as needed in-between visits. (As you can see with the image to the right, overplucking can result in gaps or holes in the brow line, or can leave them too thin.)

2. Don’t spread your brows too far apart.bad1
Having too much space in-between your brows can make your nose look wider and your eyes look smaller. Don’t tweeze any wider than the bridge of your nose. Just clean up the very center as needed. (This image shows what can happen when you tweeze the center past the natural bridge of the nose. The eyebrows are too far apart, making the face look more round and the eyes look small and further apart. They’re also way too high, giving a very unflattering shape.)

3. Don’t tweeze into your natural brow shape!bad3
Stick with removing the hair that is further away from the brow. It gets too easy to make mistakes when you start removing hair from the actual brow- just tweezing out one hair too many can ruin your shape. (Tweezing too much into the natural brow shape has turned both of these brows too thin. The image on the top shows how overplucking has left her with hardly any brows left, and a bad attempt at filling them in. The image on the bottom shows that overplucking has left her with almost no eyebrows, and filling in just a thin line gives a very unnatural appearance.)

Here’s a List of 3 Eyebrow Do’s:

1. Do grow them out and come see our eyebrow gurus!
If you’re unhappy with your current brow shape, just stick to cleaning up the very outside while letting them grow in for a few weeks. Head Candy has 2 amazing eyebrow gurus that can give you an eyebrow makeover! Giving them a little more to work with gives you more opportunity to have your best eyebrows!

2. Do invest in a great brow kit if you have gaps or your brows are too thintoofaced
The first step in getting great brows is learning how to find an amazing shape that goes with your natural brows. When you come in to see our eyebrow guru Chrissi, filling-in is the first step she takes in shaping your brows. She then cleans up around the newly shaped arch. This can help you maintain your new perfect brows at home and will help keep you from overdoing it. We use and highly recommend the brow kit “Brow Envy” from Too Faced which comes with everything you need and you can pick it up at Sephora! Chrissi will even give you a lesson on filling them in at home!

3. Do Learn the Perfectly Shaped Browhow-to1
The front of the brow should line up with the upper bridge of your nose. The arch should be approximately three-quarters of the way back from the bridge of your nose. Then the tail of the brow should taper off, getting thinner, following the shape of the eye. Both brows should be pretty symmetrical and look like mirror images of each other. No two brows look perfectly alike, but they should match each other in both size and shape as close as possible. (The picture shows how to find a great shape for your natural eyebrows. We highly recommend leaving the shaping to a pro, and just maintaining the look at home, filling them in by following the picture!)

Men’s Eyebrow Groominggm
Men sometimes need their brows groomed too but you need to be especially careful not to remove too much hair, like the picture of Joey shown above! Men can get away with just a simple clean up, usually involving a small amount of trimming, and maybe just tweezing or threading a few strays away. If you comb your eyebrow hairs up and they go above your brow line, you can definitely use a little trim. If you have a unibrow or have brows as thick as Groucho Marx, then perhaps you should stop in and get those little beasts cleaned up! We don’t recommend men getting their eyebrows waxed, so threading or tweezing would be your best bet! Please don’t try this at home, especially if you have zero experience in this area. Just ask for a quick clean up at your next haircut appointment!

Guys need to pay attention to their brows too. We recommend tweezing or threading for men’s brows, along with a little trimming if needed. Just don’t over-do it. Leave this to the pros!

Curly Hair!

We get a ton of requests asking for more information on curly hair including how to style curly hair, what products to use for different types of curly hair, how to reduce frizz, and how to tame unruly curls. Help for curly hair is in such high-demand and we are dedicating this post entirely to curls curls CURLS!!

We’re also working on a few videos to add to our YouTube channel so be sure to head on over there to get some great tutorials on curly hair styles!

The Cut
The first step to getting a great look for curly hair is to get the right cut. This step is essential in getting the right shape for your specific type of curls. Many women with long curly hair complain that it tends to fall flat and straight on top, while having a lot of curl towards the ends, giving an unflattering triangle shape. This can easily be remedied by having a great cut with proper layers to help remove weight from the bottom, allowing the root area to not be dragged down. Some curly types may need to be cut when the hair is dry to see how it lays naturally. Each type of curl is unique to the individual client, and this dictates the type of cut that is needed. No 2 heads of curls are exactly alike, and no 2 heads of curls should be cut the same way. Once you have a great cut you’ll need to invest in the right products for your hair and curl type.

The Products…
Curlproducts
Having the right products, designed to moisturize, protect, and accentuate curly hair are imperative to getting the desired result. Not every head of curly hair is the same and neither is every curly hair product! African-American hair may tend to be more curly and dry compared to hair of other ethnicity’s. Because the curl pattern is tighter, it can prevent the natural oils of the scalp from flowing down the hair strand to moisturize at the ends. If possible, try not to shampoo your hair more than once per week for this type of hair.

Here is a breakdown of several amazing products meant to bring out the best in your curls!

Shampoo
Choosing the right shampoo for your hair type and curl type is a big part of ensuring that you retain the right moisture balance in your hair. You don’t want to use any harsh cleansers that strip the hair of natural oils. We strongly suggest not washing your hair more than a few times per week regardless of the shampoo you’re using. These are the 3 shampoos we recommend for curly hair.

Curl Conscious Smoothing Shampoo: $23smoothingshampoo23
This is an ultra gentle shampoo that helps to smooth and tame curls, add shine, and control frizz. It contains Transglutaminase, which helps to form curl-enhancing bonds, that give shapely, soft curls. It also contains an exclusive moisture complex and glycerin, which help to promote the absorption of moisture, locking it into the hair. This is the shampoo for all types of textures and curls with no guesswork needed.

Color Minded Sulfate-Free Shampoo: $29colorminded_shampoo_large
If you have curly hair that is also color-treated, the Color Minded shampoo is also a worthy option. Sulfate-free cleansing helps prevent color washout while revealing lustre. This is an ultra-mild cleanser that protects and prolongs color, while adding mild conditioning. It contains a few long words (Polyquaternium-7, Polyquaternium-10, Phenyl Trimethicone) that are used to condition and help with ease of combing, along with a combination of methicones to lock in color. Highly recommended for our brightly colored curly clients.

Creme de Coco Shampoo: $24cocosh
This is a super rich, luxurious shampoo perfect for curly hair that craves extra moisture. It’s extra-mild, with a blend of moisture-rich Coconut and Murumuru Butters to help restore sheen & softness, improve flexibility and minimize frizz. Contains Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil & Extract and Palm Tree Butter to add moisture and shine, Milk Thistle Extract to protect, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch to restore elasticity, body and moisture. If your curls seem to be super dry and frizzy, we highly recommend this amazing shampoo!

Conditioner
Curly hair loves conditioner and seems like it just can’t get enough! The problem for a lot of clients with curly hair is that you may be afraid of conditioner if you have flat or limp, lazy curls, or fine hair. You get a great curl pattern on the midlengths and ends, but it falls flat on top. That doesn’t mean you can’t use a conditioner, or that you can only use light conditioners. That problem is easily solved with the right conditioner, the right cut, along with styling products and techniques. These are our picks for curly conditioners and masques.

Curl Conscious Conditioner: $24smoothingconditioner24
This conditioner is perfect for most curls! It has a nice amount of moisturizers that turn tangles into tendrils, yet isn’t too heavy, and has curl-enhancing ingredients, making it the perfect curly conditioner. The conditioner also has Transglutaminase, that wonderful ingredient that forms curl-enhancing bonds, and a patented Moisture Complex that includes Glycerin for moisture & water retention, Panthenol/Pro-Vitamin B5 for sheen & manageability, Trehalose to reduce frizz and flyaways, Hyaluranate to regulate humidity, and Polyquaternium-51 that helps to define curls and prevent frizz. When in doubt and not sure exactly which is right for you- all curly heads will love this conditioner!

Creme de Coco Conditioner: $25cococo
A moisture-rich conditioner that softens, adds shine, improves flexibility, and tames frizz. Contains Coconut Oil and Extract to add sheen and moisture, Palm Tree Butter for incredible moisture, Milk Thistle to protect, and Wild Olive Seed Oil to soften. If you need a conditioner with more weight and with as much moisture as possible, this conditioner is a winner. Not for those clients afraid of falling flat!

Extra Helpers

Leave In (Rinse-Out) Conditioner: $24leavein
An amazingly versatile product! Use as a rinse out conditioner or mild detangler, or leave it in hair as a styling aid to moisturize, tame frizz & soften without weighing hair down. Great for all hair types! Rinse out of super fine hair, or work a dab through your hair and stop there for a natural look or give it more structure or texture (or both) with additional products. Contains Vitamin E and Pro-Vitamin B5 for moisture and smoothness. Makes a great base product for very coarse hair types, before using other products, or stands alone for softly defined curls without extra weight.

Curl Conscious Nourishing Masque: $27nourishingmasque27
Give yourself a weekly or monthly conditioning masque to help keep moisture locked in, repair dry hair, and protect. This deep conditioning masque softens texture and helps curls feel fabulous without adding weight. Contains the same great curl-enhancing ingredients as the Curl Conscious shampoo and conditioner, and is the perfect monthly masque for even the finest curls!

Creme de Coco Masque: $27cocom
Your weekly or monthly ultra moisturizing masque. An indulgent masque with a trio of tropical butters which bestows intensive moisture, softness, silkiness and gloss. Contains Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter to restore softness, improve flexibility and minimize frizz, Shea Butter for mega softness, and Mango Butter for tons of moisture. Leave on over night if your hair is super coarse or really thirsty. Not suitable for fine hair.

Styling…
Now is where the real fun and customization begins! African-American hair can certainly benefit from using the right styling products, but be careful not to use too much. If you only shampoo your hair a few times per week, use any styling products sparingly to prevent product build-up. Also keep in mind that Bumble and Bumble products are really concentrated and a little goes a long way. You can always add more product, so start with a little and add as needed. Wear a silky scarf wrapped around your hair to sleep on those in-between days, it will help keep your hair in great shape for the next day! And don’t forget regular trims to keep those damaged ends away and keep the amazing shape of your curls!

Tonic Lotion: $20 B01J_152x358
Tonic Lotion is our recommended start to curly hair styling. It has a blend of herbs, vitamins and Tea Tree Oil that replaces moisture, soothes, detangles, and enhances the performance of products. Used right out of the shower to detangle and prepare hair for styling, or in-between shampoos to dampen and reactivate products already in hair. Also a great scalp elixer for dry or flaky scalps. This is Step 1 in the styling routine for every curly head!

Curl Conscious Defining Creme: $29definingcream29
This amazing curl creme helps to support soft, fine curls that tend to droop, keeping them shapely and resilient. It keeps the hair moisturized while reducing frizz and flyaways, regulates humidity and improves elasticity. Won’t weigh down your hair & keeps your curls looking bouncy and beautiful!

Curl Conscious Calming Creme: $29calmingcreme29
Smooth, soften and loosen tight curls that tend to frizz, while keeping them tamed and defined (without crunchiness). The perfect curl creme for more coarse hair types that need the extra weight to calm them down and define them without the crunchy feeling of a gel.

Curl Conscious Holding Foam: $28B0X8_152x358
For a bit more hold and defined structure, we love Holding Foam! Keep curls together regardless of heat or humidity with flexible, durable hold. Has great curl retention and memory, while controlling frizz and humidity.

Styling Creme: $25stylingcreme
This is a truly versatile product that can work like a mousse or a gel and was voted as a Best Beauty Buy in 2011 by InStyle Magazine! Love it for its versatility and simple strength – slick back, add body, lift roots or define curl. The more you use, the more it holds – wet or dry. Great for any hair type. Work through damp hair and style; use it with heat (like a mousse) to create manageable volume, or without (like a gel) for control. Reduces static, provides UV protection, retains moisture, and adds body and fullness.

Defrizz: $27defrizz
It does what it says (and more): protects against frizz, acts as a barrier to humidity and leaves hair soft, silky and flyaway-free. Anyone can use this amazing product, it’s good for curls and frizz-prone types. Use on damp hair to define curl and control frizz (blow dry or let dry); on dry hair to add sheen, control flyaways and add movement. Can use in combination with any other products!

Curl Conscious Reactivating Mist: $25reactivatingmist25
Reawaken soft waves or tame hyperactive curls – perfect for mid-morning touchups (and evening revivals). Perfect for all curl types looking to refresh curls throughout the day.
