A Day Devoted to Multiple Sclerosis

A day of celebration, empathy and gratitude…

Robin and Nick

On October 29th, Salon Head Candy held a very special two-fold event: It was our first Cut-A-Thon for Multiple Sclerosis and it was the re-launch of our salon joining forces with celebrity stylist Nick Arrojo to become part of a prestigious group and be an Arrojo Ambassador.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, unpredictable disease in which the body’s immune system attacks it’s own central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The immune system attacks myelin- the substance that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibers- as well as the nerve fibers themselves, and forms scar tissue (sclerosis). When any part of the myelin or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses traveling to and from the brain and spinal cord are distorted or interrupted. MS can cause many symptoms, including blurred vision, vertigo, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, blindness, depression, and more. These problems may come and go or they may persist and worsen over time. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 40. The disease is thought to be triggered in a genetically susceptible individual by a combination of one or more environmental factors.

Robin3The Delaware Valley MS Society sent us a handpicked list of people living with MS and we began the day with free makeovers and “before and after” photos. Our owner, Robin Dorton, lives with MS and it was so important to her, and to us, that we use this event to raise as much money and awareness as possible. Besides the free makeovers, we also scheduled some of our salon regulars for cuts and blowouts with 100% of the proceeds being donated.
You may have heard the saying “everyone knows someone with MS” and that really is the unfortunate truth. More than 2.3 million people are living with MS worldwide. Meeting people whose lives have been reshaped by this illness was humbling; despite incredible odds, everyone we met that day was in great spirits, and a few were happy to speak with us and let us know how they approach each day with positivity and gratitude.

Kristen, 32, was diagnosed at 27, while in grad school. She describes the pain she felt as a “pinched nerve” and chalked it up to a heavy book-bag and stress. She was eventually diagnosed over the phone after several visits to Rutgers, and she says that having MS is both “a blessing and a curse.” Since the disease was identified, she has adopted a healthier way of life – she goes for long bike rides and eats much healthier. She has completed her Doctorate in Chemistry and found great success with medicine in a pill form versus an injectable. She says that these days she is steadier and her routine is working for her. Kristen is already cute as a button so it didn’t take a drastic cut to perk her up! We just shortened her bangs for a more youthful appearance and softened up her layers to add more movement without taking off too much length. She has beautiful hair and such a positive personality and we loved spending the day with her!

We also spoke to Sandy, who was diagnosed in 1999 following a series of bad headaches and dizzy spells; she underwent three MRI-s, a neurological scan, and a spinal tap before being told she had MS. She has suffered with chronic fatigue and memory loss but maintains her sense of humor; her son, who accompanied her to her free makeover, joked that driving with her now is an adventure! Despite having to leave her job of 27 years, Sandy said that since she found a medication that works for her, most days are good and that since her diagnosis she has really focused on her quality of life. We loved being able to give Sandy this great new cut with long layers to add volume and softness around her face, while putting the personality into her hair that’s a better match for her light-hearted spirit!

Maxine told us about her unique experience with MS: In 1988, she experienced a bevy of symptoms including numbness, itching, and one eye becoming darker than the other. However, in a week, all of these disappeared and her concerns were dismissed after tests came back with no concrete diagnosis. It wasn’t until the mid-2000’s that she began to experience symptoms again, including loss of balance and clumsiness. Again, tests were run and this time, they showed MS, but Maxine has not let that stop her. She says her approach to life is to “play her hand with grace and dignity” and, despite retiring only a month ago, she has remained active in her community and volunteers at a crisis hotline.
She was diagnosed in 2000, when she was working in a casino as a banquet server. She said that one day her balance just changed; she described this feeling as having “marbles under her feet.” On New Year’s Eve in 1999, her body completely locked up while she was working, and she lost feeling in her legs shortly thereafter; since that time, she has been in a wheelchair. It was a few years later that a specialist “un-diagnosed” her MS, but a subsequent spinal tap showed the disease to be still present; after a decade of trying new meds and dealing with the side effects, she is finally on a prescription that works for her. Maxine told us that she does not let MS control her life, and she does what she can to fight for others impacted by the disease, including fighting for a New Jersey state law to prevent the abuse of placards that allow disabled drivers to park in designated spaces. She says, “if I can make a change, that’s the reason I was given MS.” Maxine didn’t want a haircut the day she came to visit but we decided to pamper her anyway and gave her a free shampoo, scalp massage and blowout!

Here’s the lovely Nancy. When we got word that Nancy was coming in to get her hair done for the first time in over 10 years due to her mobility issues, we knew that there was a reason we were meant to do these makeovers. She called ahead of time to make sure that our salon is wheelchair accessible and we assured her that she was coming to the right place with nothing to worry about. We cut a few inches off her length to get rid of the tired ends, added some soft, low-maintenace long layers, and fixed up her bangs to make them even. We also made sure that after a 10 year wait she not only received an amazing haircut, but got the star treatment with a full makeup application so that she left feeling as beautiful on the outside as she truly is on the inside!

Everyone who participated in our Cut-A-Thon thanked us for shining a spotlight on Multiple Sclerosis; however, it’s really us who want to thank them – for their bravery, for their candor, and for showing us that life doesn’t stop with a diagnosis!

Once the Cut-A-Thon was completed, we were ready to party! Friends, family, and clients filled the salon as we waited for Nick Arrojo to arrive – and, once he did, the fun really started. He graciously took photos with everyone and helped us raffle off baskets containing everything from a collection of his Shine Luxe products to a movie night basket that included candy, popcorn, and DVDs.

The true highlight of the evening, however, was the impromptu haircut he did on a client that wore orange in support of MS! In 20 minutes he turned a head of tired, frizzy curls into a short, bouncy cut full of movement of shine. Clearly, Arrojo is at home in front of a crowd, playing to the audience and making jokes, all while breathing new life into the head of hair before him. We at Heady Candy are truly grateful for the opportunity to be an Arrojo Ambassador salon and look forward to everything we will accomplish with the support of this new partnership.

October 29th was a long and emotional day; from meeting some wonderful people living and thriving despite MS and being able to pamper them with makeovers, to celebrating our relaunch as an Arrojo Ambassador salon. It was a wonderful day of empathy and appreciation, gratitude and celebration.

To every person that participated in any capacity, you have my sincerest gratitude and you’ll never know how much it truly meant to me that you were there that day. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. — Robin

DIY Skin Soothers for this Harsh Weather!

These frigid temps we’ve been having can be absolute torture on our skin, causing severe dryness, flaking, chapping, and even splitting for those that wash their hands frequently like we do here at Head Candy!

Coconut oil is one of our favorite ingredients for moisture for not only the hair, but for the skin as well. It has amazing antibacterial properties, provides natural protection from sun damage, and improves the moisture and lipid content of the skin, all naturally without any added chemicals. It is the main ingredient in a few of our favorite Bumble products including the Creme de Coco and Invisible Oil lines and is a must-have for winter!

We recommend splurging on the Bumble & Bumble Creme de Cocoa Conditioner for the ultimate in moisturizing conditioner for your hair. It delivers the perfect amount of coconut oil to the hair without overloading on proteins, which is too much of a good thing. Applying too much pure coconut oil directly to the hair can overload it and cause it to become brittle. No need to worry with a perfectly mixed and tested conditioner that we’ve loved for years!

We also recommend the Hair Stimulator Vitamins, especially during the harsh winter months! When our hair is constantly in hats, feeling dry and in need of extra moisture, it needs all the nourishment it can get. Start from the inside-out to make sure you’re taking the best care of it that you can! All of those vitamins are also helping your skin at the same time to ensure optimum cell turnover! And our vitamins are only $12.99 for a 30 day supply! But don’t forget- you get Candy Points with every $1 you spend so that adds up to free services!

Where you can save your money is on those expensive lotions and body butters! We have a few recipes for the most amazing DIY skin Soothers that we know you will love! They’re super affordable, they’re all natural, and they work better than the drug store varieties!

Whipped Coconut Butter

1 Tablespoon Vitamin E + 1 Cup solid Coconut Oil

Whip with the whisk attachment of your electric mixer for 5-7 minutes. Store in an airtight container. (We love small recycled jars for this!)

(null)

Soothing Coco Lotion

1/4 Cup Coconut oil + 1/2 Cup Olive oil + 1 teaspoon Vitamin E + 1 Tablespoon Shea Butter + 1 drop Vanilla extract (optional)

Place all ingredients in a glass jar with lid on, closed loosely. Put 2 inches of water in a saucepan and place jar in center of saucepan. Place saucepan on stove over medium heat. Slowly heat until ingredients melt completely. Remove from heat carefully, remove lid and stir. Use lotion within 5-6 months.

Top Ten List of Foods and Vitamins for Healthy Hair

Clients are always asking if there are any magic vitamins that will help with growing healthy, beautiful hair. Of course, there’s more to hair health than just taking a vitamin! A healthy lifestyle, following your stylist’s advice for proper hair care and products, and getting enough sleep can all do wonders for your hair. And to go along with that, here is our Top Ten List of foods and vitamins that can help give you that great hair and skin you long for!

1. SalmonOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Salmon is rich in protein, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. About 3% of the hair shaft is made up of these fatty acids, which your body can’t make, and which you need to grow hair. They also keep your scalp and hair hydrated! Trout, avocado, and pumpkin seeds can also give you these amazing fatty acids!

2. WalnutsWalnuts
These are the only type of nut that contain a large amount of those essential omega-3 fatty acids. Even better, they are rich in biotin and vitamin E. Vitamin E is a great protector from DNA damage, and sun damage. Use walnut oil in your salad dressing as an easy way to ensure getting it into your diet!

3. ZincZinc
Having a lack of zinc in your diet can lead to hair loss, along with a dry scalp. It can also be a great help for dandruff and psoriasis sufferers. You can take a supplement for zinc, or you can add foods rich in zinc into your diet like oysters, cereals, nuts, and eggs.

4. Beta CaroteneSweet Potatoes
Beta Carotene is a much needed antioxidant which your body turns into vitamin A. It helps your scalp produce the oils used to protect and nourish your hair. Being low in vitamin A can lead to a dry, flaky scalp. Foods rich in beta carotene include sweet potatoes, carrots, mangoes and pumpkin.

5. Eggseggs
Not only are eggs a great source of protein, but they are also full of a few other minerals that are key to maintaining hair and skin health. They are rich in zinc, and also in iron, which helps carry oxygen to the hair follicles. Too little iron, also known as anemia, is a major cause of hair loss in women.

6. Dark, leafy greenskale
Spinach, kale, and broccoli are all rich in iron, beta carotene, folate and vitamin C, which helps to keep hair follicles healthy and helps with scalp oils for hydrating the hair.

7. Lentilslentils
Lots of vegetarians and vegans know about the amazing health benefits of these legumes. They’re a major source of protein for those that don’t eat meat, but they are also rich in iron, zinc, and biotin- all essential to healthy hair and scalp! You can also try adding edamame and kidney beans to get all of these great nutrients.

8. Vitamin B Complexgreek-yogurt
You may see this ingredient in a lot of hair care products, for the wonders that it does for the health of the hair follicle. You can find vitamin B5 in a lot of dairy products, like Greek yogurt, cheese, and milk, which also contain protein and vitamin D. Vitamin B Complex contains every vitamin B available, including B6, B12, and Biotin. They help reduce hair loss, slow down graying process, and promote shiny hair.

9. Vitamin Cblue
This vitamin is critical for circulation, and supports blood vessels that feed your hair follicles. Not having enough vitamin C in your diet can lead to hair being fragile or breaking. Try adding more blueberries, tomatoes, and strawberries to you diet to get plenty of vitamin C.

10. Vitamin Avitamin-a_2
This may be the most essential vitamin for optimum hair and scalp health. This is one vitamin that is easiest to get your daily allowance by taking a supplement. Vitamin A adds conditioners to the scalp, it fights free radicals like pollution that weaken hair, and it strengthens hair strands.

Natrol Biotin Maximum Strength and Viviscal both contain many different nutrients viviscal_box_350w 20120206_170that help with hair and skin health. They are an easy way to add a supplement to a healthy diet that can give you a good all-around assortment of the essentials needed every day. Both can be found at most health-food stores, pharmacies, or online.

Top Ten List of Hair Myths and Truths

Top 10 Myths vs Truths About Hairtop 10 myths

We made a list of the ten most common hair questions that we hear from our clients on a daily basis here at Head Candy and we wanted to take some time to clear things up! Here is our top 10 list!

10. Hair must be washed every day.tonic

MYTH! While bathing or showering every day is certainly a great idea, we do not recommend washing your hair every day! Three times per week is plenty but every other day is just fine as well. Don’t forget that hair is a fiber much like wool or silk. Think about that comfy wool sweater you have that starts to look worse and worse with every washing. If you have long, thick, coarse, or curly hair you can go even longer in-between washings. These hair textures tend to dry out and become frizzy due to lack of moisture. If you have an oily scalp, make sure you are using the proper shampoo that is meant to correct any scalp or oily issues and try to retrain your scalp by washing every other day. We love Bumble & Bumble Tonic shampoo for any oily or itchy scalp problems!

9. Trimming your ends will make your hair grow faster.masque

MYTH! Typical hair grows about ½” per month and trimming your ends won’t make your hair grow any faster. We still suggest getting regular trims to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy, but the only real factors that affect hair growth are genetics, hormones, diet, and the overall health of your scalp and hair follicles. To keep your ends from getting split or broken, avoid using heat from irons and blow dryers. If you do use heat on your ends regularly we recommend using products that protect your hair from those elements and doing shampooa regular moisturizing treatment to keep in good condition. Bumble and Bumble Quenching line is amazing for keeping your hair moisturized and there are quite a few great styling products that do double duty of helping to style and protect your hair from heat. When trying to grow hair, we love the Revita shampoo and conditioner to keep your scalp and follicles at their optimum levels.

8. You can’t get your hair colored during pregnancy.

MYTH! Head Candy is always concerned with what our pregnant and nursing clients are exposed to in the salon but no studies have ever proven that hair color is dangerous for a developing fetus. We only use the highest quality hair color in our salon and all of the services we provide are completely free of formaldehyde. Please be sure to inform your stylist if you are pregnant and all of your concerns will be addressed. There are still plenty of options available, including our amazing Wella color glazes, which are perfectly safe for everyone and they are totally ammonia-free!

7. Wearing ponytails will cause premature baldness.home_display

TRUE! This may be surprising to most people but this is somewhat true! While an occasional ponytail won’t cause any harm, frequent super tight ponytails could lead to traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss caused by stress, tension, and regular pulling of the scalp and hair fibers. This type of alopecia can happen to anyone but is more common among women of color who wear their hair pulled tightly in braids, ponytails and extensions. Even parting your hair the same way for a long time can cause the part to widen which is another form of traction alopecia. The same goes for headbands, rollers, and excessive heat. Try using less tension in your ponytail and changing the way you part your hair every few weeks. And don’t forget to take your stylist’s advice on changing styles and shampoo and product recommendations!

6. Washing hair in cold water will make it shinier.shine

MYTH! Hair does not actually contain any living cells so it does not react to hot or cold water. The myth comes from the belief that cold water will make the cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair close so that it lays flat and helps to reflect light. Cold water will not close the cuticle layer of the hair- that requires a pH balancer to restore the hair to its most natural pH level. Many of the in-salon services can close down that cuticle layer, including toners, glazes, and several conditioning treatments. If you’re looking to add shine to your hair, we recommend getting a Wella glaze or glossing service which can even be done in a totally clear formula if you don’t want to change the color of your hair. We also love Bumble and Bumble “Let it Shine” shampoo and conditioner for at home use to get your hair extra shiny!

5. Hair loss and baldness comes from the Mother’s side.revita

MYTH! You can still blame your maternal grandfather for some of your hair loss but he can no longer take all of the blame! Research has shown approximately 200 different genes that regulate hair growth, coming from both sides of the family. There are also many other reasons why we lose our hair or go bald including diet, environment, sun damage, hormones, and several others. At the first sign of hair loss you need to start a regimen of using shampoo, conditioner and treatments specifically designed to help keep the hair that you have and prevent further loss. We carry the Revita line of products that are 100% guaranteed by the manufacturer. And talk to your stylist about the best ways to care for your hair and scalp.

4. Exposing your hair to sunlight is the best way to get natural highlights or lighten your hair.B1CK_152x358

MYTH! This is a total myth! UV rays are just as damaging to hair as they are to our skin! Those powerful UV rays can cause hair to lighten, but can also cause your hair to fade and can burn your scalp! Hair is not a shield or protective barrier between the damaging sun and your sensitive scalp. With so many safe and affordable ways to lighten up or add eye-catching highlights to your hair, don’t risk the permanent damage that can be caused by the sun! Instead, opt for a subtle accent highlight that starts at just $20 and take home the amazing Bumble and Bumble Color Minded products with UV protection!

3. Your eyebrows should be the same color as your hair.

MYTH! The most natural look is for eyebrows to be 1-2 levels darker than the hair on your head. While you certainly can color your eyebrows to closely match your hair color, keep in mind that our eyebrows shed about twice as fast as the time needed for a root touch up. Most touch-ups are done every 4-5 weeks but eyebrows will need touched up in about 2 weeks. Even platinum blondes shouldn’t lighten their brows too much or you’d end up looking like you don’t have any brows at all! Keep your brows a bit darker and instead opt for filling in brows with a lighter colored pencil or powder.

2. If you’re planning to wear an updo for a special event, your hair should be slightly dirty.weddings

MYTH! This statement may cause many debates, even among different stylists and so-called magazine experts but at Head Candy we say it is a myth that dirty hair works best for formal styling! The main problem with this statement is that nearly every person has a different definition of the word “dirty”. Even though freshly washed and conditioned hair tends to be too soft for the texture and grip needed for doing a formal style or updo, we would rather just add that grip ourselves with products. We have no idea what products you are using at home and unfortunately most non-professional products are not meant to be layered. They can cause flakes or white spots when brushed out or touched with a hot iron. Once that happens there is no way of fixing it except to wash the hair, which then adds on a blowdry service at a cost of $30 & up, and adds an extra 30-45 minutes to the service time. We have the most amazing Bumble and Bumble products which stand the test of time all while layering, applying heat, and brushing backstage at NY Fashion Week and through countless shows and photo shoots. Most non-professional products can’t do the things that our products can do, which is why we use them. We are professionals that know how to make hair do what we need it to do. So we recommend coming to your updo appointment with clean dry hair. Use very little conditioner so your hair isn’t too soft, but leave the other products to us!

1. I Wouldn’t Look Good with Short Hair.

MYTH! There are so many different styles nowadays that anyone would look great with shorter hair! We just love when celebrities help to inspire our clients by cutting off their hair and sporting those modern, hip, and super sexy pixie cuts! When you have a great stylist you can easily trust them with helping you choose a short crop that would suit you perfectly. Be sure to start saving pictures of all the short styles you crave so we can get an idea of exactly what you’re looking for. Take the time to ask lots of questions and pay attention to the styling and products used to go with your new do. Whether you decide to go gradually shorter or just take the plunge and get a dramatic new makeover, we know you’ll love the freedom and ease of a great new short haircut!

It’s Classic for a Reason!
When in doubt, stick with the classics! A classic smoky eye, a classic red lip, a classic black dress, a classic bun- all classics that never go out of style!

Choose your dress first!
Your dress style, color, and neckline will all determine how you should wear your hair and makeup! This is the important first step. If the bodice of your dress has lots of beading or an intricate pattern, you don’t want to wear long loose curls that will cover it up! The same goes for a high neckline. You’ll want to wear your hair all up in a pretty updo. If your dress is a one-shoulder design, you’ll want to wear your hair up, or swept over to the other side. Your makeup color will also be determined by the color of your dress. A classic red lip would clash with that bright pink or pastel green dress!

If you’re unsure of how to wear your hair, don’t worry! We have a book in our waiting area that has a great guideline of what hairstyles work best with different types of dresses! Bring a picture of your dress and your stylist can help you find a style that will be perfect for you!

What’s Old is New Again!
You can never go wrong when you go vintage! Find your inner flapper or pinup girl and stand out in the crowd! Head Candy stylists have tons of experience with vintage styling from every decade of the past. We can even give you a modern version of a vintage look! From the fingerwaves and sharp bobs of the roaring 20’s, to the soft elegance of the 30’s and 40’s, to the classic pinup girl of the 50’s, Head Candy is your go-to place for vintage style! We also have an entire book devoted to these amazing favorites!

Radiant Orchid
Pantone’s Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid and we are in love with this color! Whether you have a dress in this color, or you want to play up your eyes or your lips in this color, Radiant Orchid is the color of the year for good reason! It is such a beautiful bright shade and can be made to suit every girl for prom!

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not sure of how to wear my hair for my prom?

We have a great guide in the salon that gives suggestions on how to wear your hair depending on your dress style and neckline. You can also take some time to gather inspiring photos online and bring them to your appointment! Be sure to bring a picture of your dress too!

How far in advance should I book my appointment?

ASAP!! Most proms fall on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, which are the busiest days in the salon. Our early afternoon and evening spots book up very quickly, especially during the busy prom and wedding season! As soon as you know what time you’ll need to be ready, book your appointment! Don’t forget to give yourself extra time to go home and get a shower, get in your dress, and get your pictures taken by your adoring family and friends!

How long before my prom should I have other services done?

For color, highlights and trims, we recommend 1-2 weeks. This will ensure that your color is fresh for the big day, while leaving any time needed for emergencies or color changes. For waxing services we recommend 5-7 days, which lets your skin be fresh and smooth for the day of, while ensuring that any redness or swelling has time to go away. For GelMani’s, you can have this service done the day of, or within 5-7 days.

Do I have to wear my hair up for my prom?

No, you can wear your hair in any style that suits you and your dress. Most girls prefer to wear their hair up so they look more formal, and they don’t have to worry about “messing” with their hair for the entire day and night. Keep in mind what the weather is going to be like, and how well your hair will cooperate with the weather. Also think about things like humidity or how lots of dancing could wear down your curls, causing frizz, or falling flat. These are all important things to consider when choosing your hairstyle. We will give recommendations based on your prom date, hair type, and typical weather patterns during the different seasons.

How should I have my skin and hair prepared for my appointment?

Arrive to the salon with clean, dry skin, wearing only your usual moisturizer. Please make sure you have removed all remnants of makeup from the day before and don’t wear any foundation, mascara, or concealers. Please also arrive with clean, dry hair. If your hair needs to be blown out straight for your updo, please either arrive with it blown out or include a blowout when booking your appointment. Blowouts are not included with updos, so be prepared to do this yourself, or to pay extra for a blowout the day of. DO NOT arrive with dirty hair and DO NOT put any products in your hair. It is a huge myth that dirty hair works best for updos! We don’t know what products you are using at home and most non-professional products are just not made for layering or for excessive brushing and styling. Having products left in the hair runs the risk of causing flakes the next day which look terrible when trying to achieve a beautiful updo. Please arrive with clean, dry hair! And don’t forget a button or zip up top!

Have any other questions? Feel free to give us a call and we will happily answer them for you!

FAQ’s:

Will I get a full hair consultation?headpiece

All of our packages include a full bridal trial, including hair and makeup. This will help us to get a good feel for your hair and if the look you desire will work for your hair type. It also gives us a chance to discover if any extensions will be needed, and if your chosen hair pieces, accessories, and veil will work, leaving you plenty of time to order or exchange anything that isn’t working.

What if I’m not sure of how to wear my hair for my wedding?

Your meeting and your trial are opportunities to ask for advice and suggestions. We have an updated portfolio here on our website, along with a printed portfolio in the salon. We also have a great guide in the salon that gives suggestions on how to wear your hair depending on your dress style and neckline. You can also take some time to gather inspiring photos online and you can email them to us. Once you sign your contract with us, we make a folder just for you and your wedding, saving your contract and all important information that we need to be prepared for your big day. Any images you email to us are printed and put in your file.

How long before my wedding day should I book my trial?IMG_4729-L

We recommend approximately 2 months before your wedding day. This gives you plenty of time after your trial to order any necessary accessories, book your other appointments including touch-ups, highlights, waxing, etc.

How long before my wedding day should I have other services done?

For color, highlights and trims, we recommend 1-2 weeks. This will ensure that your color is fresh for the big day, while leaving any time needed for emergencies or color changes. For waxing services we recommend 5-7 days, which lets your skin be fresh and smooth for the day of, while ensuring that any redness or swelling has time to go away. For GelMani’s, you can have this service done the day of, or within 5-7 days.

Why are ala-carte options not available for on-location weddings?

Doing on-location weddings requires a lot of time and planning to make sure we are fully prepared with everything needed for all of the services. Some services are just not available out of the salon due to the amount of products and equipment needed, like the GelMani. We are also taking time out of a normal work day to leave the salon and our regular clients in order to travel to your location. The amount of services booked needs to compare with what can be made by working in the salon for a day. There are just too many variables with ala-carte services, and it is much easier to be organized and prepared when we know exactly what we are doing the day of your wedding!

Do I have to wear my hair up on my wedding day?

No, you can wear your hair in any style that suits you and your wedding. Most brides and bridesmaids prefer to wear their hair up so they look more formal, and they don’t have to worry about “messing” with their hair for the entire day and night. Keep in mind what the weather is going to be like on your wedding day, and how well your hair will cooperate with the weather. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, wearing your hair down runs the risk of having it blow around during your vows if it’s windy. You also risk things like humidity wearing down your curls, causing frizz, or falling flat. These are all important things to consider when choosing your hairstyle. We will give recommendations based on your wedding date, hair type, and typical weather patterns during the different seasons.

How should I have my skin and hair prepared for my big day?

Arrive to the salon or to your location with clean, dry skin, wearing only your usual moisturizer.

The Hottest Hair Color Trends

Been thinking about a change in hair color for Winter? The best new hair colors are jenanistonmulti-tonal and can be low in maintenance but high impact even with just a subtle change! All of the looks are totally customizable and unique to the individual!

Bronde Baby!
The perfect combination of blonde and brown hues, bronde is perfect for those blonde clients who are tired of the “bleach blonde” look and desire a darker shade of blonde with more dimensional highlights. It can also look great on dark hair clients who want to try out a lighter color!

Bronde is our favorite way to add gisellemore interest and dimension to our overly lightened blonde clients and is an amazing way to get the best of both worlds! You can still have those light blonde pieces you crave around your face & the top of your hair, while still maintaining a base color closer to your natural color. Its even a great way to blend away those pesky grays!

Celebrities that are making Bronde hot right now… Jennifer Aniston, Giselle & Nicole Richie!

Hot tips for getting the bronde look-nicolerichie

  • You can gradually go darker by adding some lowlights with your next touch-up

Chocolate Brown with Golden Caramel Highlights!
Brunettes should never feel left out when it comes to adding some fun seasonal changes to their hair color! If your hair is light brown you can sometimes feel like your hair is too flat or mousy and if your hair is dark brown, you may think that you don’t have any options. Never fear, you have tons of beautiful choices no matter what shade of brown you are!

How about adding some thin ribbons of warm golden or caramel highlights to your natural color. You can even add jenlthese in the interior of your hair, away from the roots to create interest without worrying about the maintenance of a typical highlight.

Or try getting some lowlights if your color is light brown. Adding some balayage lowlights along with some golden highlights can take your hair to a whole new level with no damage to the hair, no line of demarcation to worry about touching up, and it can add an incredible amount of shine!jesb

Just what is Locks of Love?

Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially
disadvantaged children with medical hair loss. Most recipients have lost their hair due to an auto-immune condition known
as alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns, radiation treatment, or any number
of dermatological conditions resulting in long term or permanent hair loss.

The custom-made, vacuum fitted hairpieces we provide don’t require tape or glue. Instead, they fit like a suction
cup, displacing air underneath to create a vacuum seal. Approximately 150,000 hairs are injected by hand into the silicone base, all of them from donated ponytails (about six to ten). Each hairpiece takes four months to complete and is designed for those with a complete loss of scalp hair.

Locks of Love meets a unique need that goes beyond superficial beauty. The children wearing these hairpieces have
lost more than their hair; they suffer from a loss of self. We hope to help provide a foundation on which children can
rebuild their self esteem, and regain the normalcy in their everyday lives that the rest of us take for granted.

Our organization relies on financial contributions from the general public and from private foundations
to help cover program costs.
