Fall Winter Head Candy Collection The 50’s

Several times every year the entire staff gets together to work on a new collection, and it is hard to believe that this is only our 2nd full collection together! I spend a few weeks carefully thinking about a theme that will not only inspire the entire staff, but will also inspire our clients, and will showcase the team’s talents, along with the ability to display the latest trends in cut, color, and styling. I announce the theme at our twice-yearly team meeting, and have everyone draw names to choose their teammates. The staff knows there is always a method to my madness, and I like having them choose teammates randomly so they get the opportunity to work with new people on a regular basis. It is great for moral and team building, and helps everyone to learn and grow by constantly working with different people.

The theme this time was vintage styles. We randomly chose decades from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and gave them a “Candy Remix” or a modern update. Since vintage styles are always coming back around again, I thought it would be a fun way for the team to put their own personal twist on updating these classics with a more modern edge using today’s techniques. We get so many requests for vintage styling, especially for weddings, and there seems to be a major surge of vintage adoration everywhere we look. With shows like Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Masters of Sex, and Downton Abbey, everyone seems to be longing for more simple times and classic beauty.

This time I called in Danielle Lambersky, a very special makeup artist that I’ve worked with on several projects before. She is amazingly talented and I absolutely adore her! I also decided to work with Jillian Goodman of Jillian Kathryn Photography for our third project together, since we seem to be making such an amazing team!

We hope you love these vintage inspirations as much as we do and our Candy Remixes on the classics! We work hard to not just stay on top of the latest trends, but to also help start the next hottest trends to keep all of you ahead of the game! We absolutely love what we do and it wouldn’t be possible without you and your support!

Finally it is the last in our collection– The 50’s! We would also like to give a big shoutout to Nick Grice over at Nordstrom’s in Cherry Hill for help in styling the 1950’s collection! He did a great job helping us find wardrobe for this collection!

The 50’s

Hair: Robin Dorton & Kristin Pellegrino
Models: Allie Robinson, Jessica Minton, Brendan Moffat

The 1950’s were booming. Booming economy, babies were booming and the new suburbs were booming. Elvis was King, James Dean was our hero, and Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe won our hearts on the big screen. Circle skirts with soft sweaters, wool coats, Levi’s and the classic white tee were the favorites of fashion, with perfectly coifed updo’s and roller set styles keeping women looking their best while they kept the house clean and the tummies full. But life wasn’t all poodle skirts and sock hops. Rosa Parks made history in the 50’s, while paving the way for Civil Rights. The Cold War threatened our way of life and communists were not to be trusted. Yet with all that is happening in today’s society and the global threats we see on the news every night, wouldn’t it be so  peachy to just get dolled up and head to the drive in for a soda pop with James, Audrey, and Marilyn?

Kristin decided that a modern day Marilyn wouldn’t just be a normal platinum blonde, but to give her a real Head Candy remix, she would have to be more of a Rose Gold with light violet accents! She prelightened her hair and then toned her with a custom mixed toner for that perfect modern rose-violet platinum! Her styling was kept more classic, close to the original, but with more modern movement and softer curls. We love the results!

Allie (Audrey Hepburn Remix)

Robin loved Allie’s look from the second she first saw her picture, and just knew that she would make the perfect modern day Audrey! She is cute as a button and an absolute sweetheart so she fit the role perfectly! Robin thought that a more updated Audrey wouldn’t just have solid dark brown hair, but would probably love the uber modern balayage highlights that all the darker-haired celebrities are wearing now. So she hand-painted lots of balayage highlights around Allie’s face and crown area, toning with a rich warm medium brown for a perfect sun-kissed look! Then she cut the dead ends off the bottom and gave her long layers with a straight razor cut with plenty of face-framing to really open up space and add lots of movement to the hair.

Brendan (James Dean Remix)

It’s not often that you put a call out for a male model that can pull of playing the role of an icon like James Dean, while being open enough to let you have your way with his hair. For several months Robin looked everywhere. She searched through her network of models, contacted a few local agencies and photographers, sent a mass text out to everyone she knew, and came up with nothing. Then one day she called her husband at work and told him to check out all the servers at his restaurant and see if anyone could possibly fit the bill. He sent a picture of Brendan and that was that. Not only does he obviously have those rugged good looks, but he also let her cut his hair any way she needed to for this photo shoot. He turned out to be the perfect model for this role, and we are quite sure you will be seeing his face again in future shoots here at Head Candy, and possibly other places too. A star just might’ve been born!

We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane! Enjoy the rest of your stay at the soda counter!!

We will be counting down the newest collection from the 90’s to the 50’s. So check back with us every few weeks to see the next decade in our trip down memory lane!

Only 2 more to go! Now is the 60’s!

The 60’s

Hair: Melissa Kenny and Jamie Tate
Models: Crystal, Sarah, Greg and Ryan

The assassinations of both President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Vietnam war, Civil Rights for African Americans, women, and gays were all part of the radical 1960’s. Hippies wanted peace and free love, women wanted equal pay, minorities wanted equal treatment. We had Janis Joplin, The Doors, Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix giving us unheard of music that still stirs something in our souls. Flower power and the smiley face were found on everything. Elvis and The Beatles had millions of women screaming and passing out. In the summer of 1969, more than 400,000 hopeful people trooped to upstate NY to be part of a harmonious 3-days known as Woodstock. Throw on your finest fringe vest and put a flower in your hair as you groove along this peaceful journey!

We have an amazing Prom Hair & Makeup package for $75!!!

It’s Classic for a Reason!
When in doubt, stick with the classics! A classic smoky eye, a classic red lip, a classic black dress, a classic bun- all classics that never go out of style!

Choose your dress first!
Your dress style, color, and neckline will all determine how you should wear your hair and makeup! This is the important first step. If the bodice of your dress has lots of beading or an intricate pattern, you don’t want to wear long loose curls that will cover it up! The same goes for a high neckline. You’ll want to wear your hair all up in a pretty updo. If your dress is a one-shoulder design, you’ll want to wear your hair up, or swept over to the other side. Your makeup color will also be determined by the color of your dress. A classic red lip would clash with that bright pink or pastel green dress!

If you’re unsure of how to wear your hair, don’t worry! We have a book in our waiting area that has a great guideline of what hairstyles work best with different types of dresses! Bring a picture of your dress and your stylist can help you find a style that will be perfect for you!

What’s Old is New Again!
You can never go wrong when you go vintage! Find your inner flapper or pinup girl and stand out in the crowd! Head Candy stylists have tons of experience with vintage styling from every decade of the past. We can even give you a modern version of a vintage look! From the fingerwaves and sharp bobs of the roaring 20’s, to the soft elegance of the 30’s and 40’s, to the classic pinup girl of the 50’s, Head Candy is your go-to place for vintage style! We also have an entire book devoted to these amazing favorites!

Radiant Orchid
Pantone’s Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid and we are in love with this color! Whether you have a dress in this color, or you want to play up your eyes or your lips in this color, Radiant Orchid is the color of the year for good reason! It is such a beautiful bright shade and can be made to suit every girl for prom!

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not sure of how to wear my hair for my prom?

We have a great guide in the salon that gives suggestions on how to wear your hair depending on your dress style and neckline. You can also take some time to gather inspiring photos online and bring them to your appointment! Be sure to bring a picture of your dress too!

How far in advance should I book my appointment?

ASAP!! Most proms fall on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, which are the busiest days in the salon. Our early afternoon and evening spots book up very quickly, especially during the busy prom and wedding season! As soon as you know what time you’ll need to be ready, book your appointment! Don’t forget to give yourself extra time to go home and get a shower, get in your dress, and get your pictures taken by your adoring family and friends!

How long before my prom should I have other services done?

For color, highlights and trims, we recommend 1-2 weeks. This will ensure that your color is fresh for the big day, while leaving any time needed for emergencies or color changes. For waxing services we recommend 5-7 days, which lets your skin be fresh and smooth for the day of, while ensuring that any redness or swelling has time to go away. For GelMani’s, you can have this service done the day of, or within 5-7 days.

Do I have to wear my hair up for my prom?

No, you can wear your hair in any style that suits you and your dress. Most girls prefer to wear their hair up so they look more formal, and they don’t have to worry about “messing” with their hair for the entire day and night. Keep in mind what the weather is going to be like, and how well your hair will cooperate with the weather. Also think about things like humidity or how lots of dancing could wear down your curls, causing frizz, or falling flat. These are all important things to consider when choosing your hairstyle. We will give recommendations based on your prom date, hair type, and typical weather patterns during the different seasons.

How should I have my skin and hair prepared for my appointment?

Arrive to the salon with clean, dry skin, wearing only your usual moisturizer. Please make sure you have removed all remnants of makeup from the day before and don’t wear any foundation, mascara, or concealers. Please also arrive with clean, dry hair. If your hair needs to be blown out straight for your updo, please either arrive with it blown out or include a blowout when booking your appointment. Blowouts are not included with updos, so be prepared to do this yourself, or to pay extra for a blowout the day of. DO NOT arrive with dirty hair and DO NOT put any products in your hair. It is a huge myth that dirty hair works best for updos! We don’t know what products you are using at home and most non-professional products are just not made for layering or for excessive brushing and styling. Having products left in the hair runs the risk of causing flakes the next day which look terrible when trying to achieve a beautiful updo. Please arrive with clean, dry hair! And don’t forget a button or zip up top!

Have any other questions? Feel free to give us a call and we will happily answer them for you!
