Fall Winter Head Candy Collection The 50’s

Several times every year the entire staff gets together to work on a new collection, and it is hard to believe that this is only our 2nd full collection together! I spend a few weeks carefully thinking about a theme that will not only inspire the entire staff, but will also inspire our clients, and will showcase the team’s talents, along with the ability to display the latest trends in cut, color, and styling. I announce the theme at our twice-yearly team meeting, and have everyone draw names to choose their teammates. The staff knows there is always a method to my madness, and I like having them choose teammates randomly so they get the opportunity to work with new people on a regular basis. It is great for moral and team building, and helps everyone to learn and grow by constantly working with different people.

The theme this time was vintage styles. We randomly chose decades from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and gave them a “Candy Remix” or a modern update. Since vintage styles are always coming back around again, I thought it would be a fun way for the team to put their own personal twist on updating these classics with a more modern edge using today’s techniques. We get so many requests for vintage styling, especially for weddings, and there seems to be a major surge of vintage adoration everywhere we look. With shows like Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Masters of Sex, and Downton Abbey, everyone seems to be longing for more simple times and classic beauty.

This time I called in Danielle Lambersky, a very special makeup artist that I’ve worked with on several projects before. She is amazingly talented and I absolutely adore her! I also decided to work with Jillian Goodman of Jillian Kathryn Photography for our third project together, since we seem to be making such an amazing team!

We hope you love these vintage inspirations as much as we do and our Candy Remixes on the classics! We work hard to not just stay on top of the latest trends, but to also help start the next hottest trends to keep all of you ahead of the game! We absolutely love what we do and it wouldn’t be possible without you and your support!

Finally it is the last in our collection– The 50’s! We would also like to give a big shoutout to Nick Grice over at Nordstrom’s in Cherry Hill for help in styling the 1950’s collection! He did a great job helping us find wardrobe for this collection!

The 50’s

Hair: Robin Dorton & Kristin Pellegrino
Models: Allie Robinson, Jessica Minton, Brendan Moffat

The 1950’s were booming. Booming economy, babies were booming and the new suburbs were booming. Elvis was King, James Dean was our hero, and Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe won our hearts on the big screen. Circle skirts with soft sweaters, wool coats, Levi’s and the classic white tee were the favorites of fashion, with perfectly coifed updo’s and roller set styles keeping women looking their best while they kept the house clean and the tummies full. But life wasn’t all poodle skirts and sock hops. Rosa Parks made history in the 50’s, while paving the way for Civil Rights. The Cold War threatened our way of life and communists were not to be trusted. Yet with all that is happening in today’s society and the global threats we see on the news every night, wouldn’t it be so  peachy to just get dolled up and head to the drive in for a soda pop with James, Audrey, and Marilyn?

Jess (Marilyn Monroe Remix)Jess before and after 1a web

Kristin decided that a modern day Marilyn wouldn’t just be a normal platinum blonde, but to give her a real Head Candy remix, she would have to be more of a Rose Gold with light violet accents! She prelightened her hair and then toned her with a custom mixed toner for that perfect modern rose-violet platinum! Her styling was kept more classic, close to the original, but with more modern movement and softer curls. We love the results!

Allie before and after 1 web

Allie (Audrey Hepburn Remix)

Robin loved Allie’s look from the second she first saw her picture, and just knew that she would make the perfect modern day Audrey! She is cute as a button and an absolute sweetheart so she fit the role perfectly! Robin thought that a more updated Audrey wouldn’t just have solid dark brown hair, but would probably love the uber modern balayage highlights that all the darker-haired celebrities are wearing now. So she hand-painted lots of balayage highlights around Allie’s face and crown area, toning with a rich warm medium brown for a perfect sun-kissed look! Then she cut the dead ends off the bottom and gave her long layers with a straight razor cut with plenty of face-framing to really open up space and add lots of movement to the hair.

Brendan (James Dean Remix)

It’s not often that you put a call out for a male model that can pull of playing the role of an icon like James Dean, while being open enough to let you have your way with his hair. For several months Robin looked everywhere. She searched through her network of models, contacted a few local agencies and photographers, sent a mass text out to everyone she knew, and came up with nothing. Then one day she called her husband at work and told him to check out all the servers at his restaurant and see if anyone could possibly fit the bill. He sent a picture of Brendan and that was that. Not only does he obviously have those rugged good looks, but he also let her cut his hair any way she needed to for this photo shoot. He turned out to be the perfect model for this role, and we are quite sure you will be seeing his face again in future shoots here at Head Candy, and possibly other places too. A star just might’ve been born!

We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane! Enjoy the rest of your stay at the soda counter!!

Only 2 more to go! Now is the 60’s!

The 60’s

Hair: Melissa Kenny and Jamie Tate
Models: Crystal, Sarah, Greg and Ryan

The assassinations of both President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Vietnam war, Civil Rights for African Americans, women, and gays were all part of the radical 1960’s. Hippies wanted peace and free love, women wanted equal pay, minorities wanted equal treatment. We had Janis Joplin, The Doors, Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix giving us unheard of music that still stirs something in our souls. Flower power and the smiley face were found on everything. Elvis and The Beatles had millions of women screaming and passing out. In the summer of 1969, more than 400,000 hopeful people trooped to upstate NY to be part of a harmonious 3-days known as Woodstock. Throw on your finest fringe vest and put a flower in your hair as you groove along this peaceful journey!

The 80’s were a happy little decade caught between social activism and self-loathing grunge. We had 2 Coreys and Kirk Cameron as our sexiest men alive, Madonna and Michael beginning their reign as King and Queen, Cabbage Patch Kids, Risky Business, 99 Luft Balloons, Punk rock making its way from London, and every kid needed a boom box. Those 80’s trends are constantly making their way back in the latest trends and we just can’t seem to let go of this decade! Luckily these are now considered classic vintage so it is like totally cool to rock those duds again, but in smaller doses as accessories. Just please leave the blonde frosted highlights and feathered bangs in the past with your banana clips!

We will be counting down the newest collection from the 90’s to the 50’s. So check back with us every few weeks to see the next decade in our trip down memory lane! First up is the 90’s!

The 90’s

Hair: Alexis Jimenez and Payal Surti
Models: Brian and Sommer

It may seem hard to believe that the 1990’s can even be considered a vintage decade, but it is indeed true that some of these trends are already 24 years old!

Music from N’SYNC, Backstreet Boys, MC Hammer, Courtney & Kurt, the Spice Girls & Britney Spears gave us a wide range of music from mainstream pop to dark and edgy grunge rock. Movies and TV including Friends, 90210, Clueless, Fresh Prince, and Saved by the Bell started the style trends that influenced millions around the world. We all wore those low crotch Hammer pants, overalls with one strap undone, bright patterns, and a few of us even wore our pants backwards to be like a pair of very young rapping one-hit-wonders. If you didn’t wear your hair in twisties or scrunchies, have the “Rachel haircut”, or a massive collection of butterfly clips and Pogs, you weren’t living in the 90’s!

Top Ten List of Hair Myths and Truths

Top 10 Myths vs Truths About Hairtop 10 myths

We made a list of the ten most common hair questions that we hear from our clients on a daily basis here at Head Candy and we wanted to take some time to clear things up! Here is our top 10 list!

10. Hair must be washed every day.tonic

MYTH! While bathing or showering every day is certainly a great idea, we do not recommend washing your hair every day! Three times per week is plenty but every other day is just fine as well. Don’t forget that hair is a fiber much like wool or silk. Think about that comfy wool sweater you have that starts to look worse and worse with every washing. If you have long, thick, coarse, or curly hair you can go even longer in-between washings. These hair textures tend to dry out and become frizzy due to lack of moisture. If you have an oily scalp, make sure you are using the proper shampoo that is meant to correct any scalp or oily issues and try to retrain your scalp by washing every other day. We love Bumble & Bumble Tonic shampoo for any oily or itchy scalp problems!

9. Trimming your ends will make your hair grow faster.masque

MYTH! Typical hair grows about ½” per month and trimming your ends won’t make your hair grow any faster. We still suggest getting regular trims to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy, but the only real factors that affect hair growth are genetics, hormones, diet, and the overall health of your scalp and hair follicles. To keep your ends from getting split or broken, avoid using heat from irons and blow dryers. If you do use heat on your ends regularly we recommend using products that protect your hair from those elements and doing shampooa regular moisturizing treatment to keep in good condition. Bumble and Bumble Quenching line is amazing for keeping your hair moisturized and there are quite a few great styling products that do double duty of helping to style and protect your hair from heat. When trying to grow hair, we love the Revita shampoo and conditioner to keep your scalp and follicles at their optimum levels.

8. You can’t get your hair colored during pregnancy.

MYTH! Head Candy is always concerned with what our pregnant and nursing clients are exposed to in the salon but no studies have ever proven that hair color is dangerous for a developing fetus. We only use the highest quality hair color in our salon and all of the services we provide are completely free of formaldehyde. Please be sure to inform your stylist if you are pregnant and all of your concerns will be addressed. There are still plenty of options available, including our amazing Wella color glazes, which are perfectly safe for everyone and they are totally ammonia-free!

7. Wearing ponytails will cause premature baldness.home_display

TRUE! This may be surprising to most people but this is somewhat true! While an occasional ponytail won’t cause any harm, frequent super tight ponytails could lead to traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss caused by stress, tension, and regular pulling of the scalp and hair fibers. This type of alopecia can happen to anyone but is more common among women of color who wear their hair pulled tightly in braids, ponytails and extensions. Even parting your hair the same way for a long time can cause the part to widen which is another form of traction alopecia. The same goes for headbands, rollers, and excessive heat. Try using less tension in your ponytail and changing the way you part your hair every few weeks. And don’t forget to take your stylist’s advice on changing styles and shampoo and product recommendations!

6. Washing hair in cold water will make it shinier.shine

MYTH! Hair does not actually contain any living cells so it does not react to hot or cold water. The myth comes from the belief that cold water will make the cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair close so that it lays flat and helps to reflect light. Cold water will not close the cuticle layer of the hair- that requires a pH balancer to restore the hair to its most natural pH level. Many of the in-salon services can close down that cuticle layer, including toners, glazes, and several conditioning treatments. If you’re looking to add shine to your hair, we recommend getting a Wella glaze or glossing service which can even be done in a totally clear formula if you don’t want to change the color of your hair. We also love Bumble and Bumble “Let it Shine” shampoo and conditioner for at home use to get your hair extra shiny!

5. Hair loss and baldness comes from the Mother’s side.revita

MYTH! You can still blame your maternal grandfather for some of your hair loss but he can no longer take all of the blame! Research has shown approximately 200 different genes that regulate hair growth, coming from both sides of the family. There are also many other reasons why we lose our hair or go bald including diet, environment, sun damage, hormones, and several others. At the first sign of hair loss you need to start a regimen of using shampoo, conditioner and treatments specifically designed to help keep the hair that you have and prevent further loss. We carry the Revita line of products that are 100% guaranteed by the manufacturer. And talk to your stylist about the best ways to care for your hair and scalp.

4. Exposing your hair to sunlight is the best way to get natural highlights or lighten your hair.B1CK_152x358

MYTH! This is a total myth! UV rays are just as damaging to hair as they are to our skin! Those powerful UV rays can cause hair to lighten, but can also cause your hair to fade and can burn your scalp! Hair is not a shield or protective barrier between the damaging sun and your sensitive scalp. With so many safe and affordable ways to lighten up or add eye-catching highlights to your hair, don’t risk the permanent damage that can be caused by the sun! Instead, opt for a subtle accent highlight that starts at just $20 and take home the amazing Bumble and Bumble Color Minded products with UV protection!

3. Your eyebrows should be the same color as your hair.

MYTH! The most natural look is for eyebrows to be 1-2 levels darker than the hair on your head. While you certainly can color your eyebrows to closely match your hair color, keep in mind that our eyebrows shed about twice as fast as the time needed for a root touch up. Most touch-ups are done every 4-5 weeks but eyebrows will need touched up in about 2 weeks. Even platinum blondes shouldn’t lighten their brows too much or you’d end up looking like you don’t have any brows at all! Keep your brows a bit darker and instead opt for filling in brows with a lighter colored pencil or powder.

2. If you’re planning to wear an updo for a special event, your hair should be slightly dirty.weddings

MYTH! This statement may cause many debates, even among different stylists and so-called magazine experts but at Head Candy we say it is a myth that dirty hair works best for formal styling! The main problem with this statement is that nearly every person has a different definition of the word “dirty”. Even though freshly washed and conditioned hair tends to be too soft for the texture and grip needed for doing a formal style or updo, we would rather just add that grip ourselves with products. We have no idea what products you are using at home and unfortunately most non-professional products are not meant to be layered. They can cause flakes or white spots when brushed out or touched with a hot iron. Once that happens there is no way of fixing it except to wash the hair, which then adds on a blowdry service at a cost of $30 & up, and adds an extra 30-45 minutes to the service time. We have the most amazing Bumble and Bumble products which stand the test of time all while layering, applying heat, and brushing backstage at NY Fashion Week and through countless shows and photo shoots. Most non-professional products can’t do the things that our products can do, which is why we use them. We are professionals that know how to make hair do what we need it to do. So we recommend coming to your updo appointment with clean dry hair. Use very little conditioner so your hair isn’t too soft, but leave the other products to us!

1. I Wouldn’t Look Good with Short Hair.

MYTH! There are so many different styles nowadays that anyone would look great with shorter hair! We just love when celebrities help to inspire our clients by cutting off their hair and sporting those modern, hip, and super sexy pixie cuts! When you have a great stylist you can easily trust them with helping you choose a short crop that would suit you perfectly. Be sure to start saving pictures of all the short styles you crave so we can get an idea of exactly what you’re looking for. Take the time to ask lots of questions and pay attention to the styling and products used to go with your new do. Whether you decide to go gradually shorter or just take the plunge and get a dramatic new makeover, we know you’ll love the freedom and ease of a great new short haircut!

Prom 2014

Prom 2014 is Here!!

Formal photo shoot. Hair by Rachel.

We’ve compiled a list of our favorite hair and makeup trends to help you look and feel your best so you can dance the night away, have a blast, and have memories you’ll cherish forever! We’ve also included a Q&A below to help answer your top questions about all things Prom beauty! Don’t forget to schedule your appointment ASAP- we book up quickly on those busy prom days! We have an amazing Prom Hair & Makeup package for $75!!!

It’s Classic for a Reason!
When in doubt, stick with the classics! A classic smoky eye, a classic red lip, a classic black dress, a classic bun- all classics that never go out of style!

Choose your dress first!
Your dress style, color, and neckline will all determine how you should wear your hair and makeup! This is the important first step. If the bodice of your dress has lots of beading or an intricate pattern, you don’t want to wear long loose curls that will cover it up! The same goes for a high neckline. You’ll want to wear your hair all up in a pretty updo. If your dress is a one-shoulder design, you’ll want to wear your hair up, or swept over to the other side. Your makeup color will also be determined by the color of your dress. A classic red lip would clash with that bright pink or pastel green dress!

If you’re unsure of how to wear your hair, don’t worry! We have a book in our waiting area that has a great guideline of what hairstyles work best with different types of dresses! Bring a picture of your dress and your stylist can help you find a style that will be perfect for you!

What’s Old is New Again!
You can never go wrong when you go vintage! Find your inner flapper or pinup girl and stand out in the crowd! Head Candy stylists have tons of experience with vintage styling from every decade of the past. We can even give you a modern version of a vintage look! From the fingerwaves and sharp bobs of the roaring 20’s, to the soft elegance of the 30’s and 40’s, to the classic pinup girl of the 50’s, Head Candy is your go-to place for vintage style! We also have an entire book devoted to these amazing favorites!

Radiant Orchid
Pantone’s Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid and we are in love with this color! Whether you have a dress in this color, or you want to play up your eyes or your lips in this color, Radiant Orchid is the color of the year for good reason! It is such a beautiful bright shade and can be made to suit every girl for prom!

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not sure of how to wear my hair for my prom?

We have a great guide in the salon that gives suggestions on how to wear your hair depending on your dress style and neckline. You can also take some time to gather inspiring photos online and bring them to your appointment! Be sure to bring a picture of your dress too!

How far in advance should I book my appointment?

ASAP!! Most proms fall on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, which are the busiest days in the salon. Our early afternoon and evening spots book up very quickly, especially during the busy prom and wedding season! As soon as you know what time you’ll need to be ready, book your appointment! Don’t forget to give yourself extra time to go home and get a shower, get in your dress, and get your pictures taken by your adoring family and friends!

How long before my prom should I have other services done?

For color, highlights and trims, we recommend 1-2 weeks. This will ensure that your color is fresh for the big day, while leaving any time needed for emergencies or color changes. For waxing services we recommend 5-7 days, which lets your skin be fresh and smooth for the day of, while ensuring that any redness or swelling has time to go away. For GelMani’s, you can have this service done the day of, or within 5-7 days.

Do I have to wear my hair up for my prom?

No, you can wear your hair in any style that suits you and your dress. Most girls prefer to wear their hair up so they look more formal, and they don’t have to worry about “messing” with their hair for the entire day and night. Keep in mind what the weather is going to be like, and how well your hair will cooperate with the weather. Also think about things like humidity or how lots of dancing could wear down your curls, causing frizz, or falling flat. These are all important things to consider when choosing your hairstyle. We will give recommendations based on your prom date, hair type, and typical weather patterns during the different seasons.

How should I have my skin and hair prepared for my appointment?

Arrive to the salon with clean, dry skin, wearing only your usual moisturizer. Please make sure you have removed all remnants of makeup from the day before and don’t wear any foundation, mascara, or concealers. Please also arrive with clean, dry hair. If your hair needs to be blown out straight for your updo, please either arrive with it blown out or include a blowout when booking your appointment. Blowouts are not included with updos, so be prepared to do this yourself, or to pay extra for a blowout the day of. DO NOT arrive with dirty hair and DO NOT put any products in your hair. It is a huge myth that dirty hair works best for updos! We don’t know what products you are using at home and most non-professional products are just not made for layering or for excessive brushing and styling. Having products left in the hair runs the risk of causing flakes the next day which look terrible when trying to achieve a beautiful updo. Please arrive with clean, dry hair! And don’t forget a button or zip up top!

Have any other questions? Feel free to give us a call and we will happily answer them for you!

Spring Collection 2014

Welcome to Head Candy’s first full collection for Spring 2014!

Our entire staff got together in January for a full day of makeovers to present our favorite cuts, colors, and styles for Spring. We assembled into 4 teams and each team chose a candy as inspiration for the looks. It was an amazing day full of hard work, team building, creativity, and a showcase of the awesome talent that works here at Head Candy. We also wanted to give a big thanks to Chrissi, who did all of the makeup for every model in our photo shoot! We truly hope you enjoy our portfolio as much as we enjoyed assembling it for you!

Butterscotchbutterscotch1

Team Butterscotch features the work of Kristin and Payal. For their color makeover, they lightened the model to a pale blonde and added lowlights in soft butterscotch and golden tones for depth and dimension. They finished with her cut by transforming it into a trendy short pixie with plenty of textureJanet Makeover! For their men’s look they did a super short classic fade with a defined side part, which is right on trend for 2014! It has a hint of that great vintage look that’s highly requested in the salon right now. The Butterscotch updo is their version of an updated 1940’s look with classic pin curls and Victory Rolls to coordinate with her adorable polka-dot dress! Nice job Payal & Kristin!

Candy Barcandybar2

The Candy Bar team features Alexis, Christina & Melissa. For their color makeover, they added slices of caramel highlights with great placement to really stand out when the hair is parted to the side. For the men’s cut they used the model’s natural texture to add the height they wanted, while cleaning up the sides and nape to a short clipper cut, keeping him groomed and polished. Nerds makeover Their updo is an oh-so-cute side bun with lots of pin-curls and a side swept bang in a super nerdy girl fashion. And let’s not forget the glasses and suspenders for nerd prowess!

Cotton Candycottoncandy1

Team Cotton Candy features the work of Robin and Tronisha. They loved the idea of choosing Cotton Candy to feature the exaggerated texture they could get with natural curly hair, while having the opportunity to use lots of the soft pastel and candy colors that are so trendy right now in the salon, and all over the world!

For Robin’s first color makeover on Jess, the entire head was prelightened to pale blonde. Jess makeoverShe then added slices going around the head in pinks, purples, candy greens, and blues. The roots were toned to a lavendar, while the midlengths and ends were toned to a pale blonde with a hint of lavendar. She then gave Jess ultra-chic blunt bangs and a new bob, with a few long tendrils hanging over for interest.

For Tronisha’s color makeover on Gabby, she Gab makeoverprelightened her existing dark roots, pulling the lightener through the rest of the hair for the last few minutes of processing time in order to get rid of the unwanted brassy yellow tones. She then weaved different shades of purples, blues, and slate grays through her new bangs, while toning the rest of the hair to a soft pale blonde with a subtle hint of violet. She played with different textures on her styling, giving her smooth and sleek bangs with full blown out volume on the rest!

For Robin’s second color makeover, she prelightened a circular section with asymmetrical Emily makeoverplacement on the top of Emily’s head. She then added a ton of slices in various shades of fuschia, red, purple, pink, and blue, throughout the prelightened circle. The remaining hair was colored to a new deep red-plum base. Emily got a great classic Bumble blowout for those big bouncy curls that last for days!   The Cotton Candy Men’s cut features Alex from 12 oz Studios.

For his first style Robin picked out his natural fro to amazing height! After that he was shampooed, and Bumble and Bumble’s Curl Conscious Calming Creme was applied after the hair was sprayed with Tonic Spray! Curly hair has plenty of styling options and his hair shows it off perfectly!

FAQ’s:

Will I get a full hair consultation?headpiece

All of our packages include a full bridal trial, including hair and makeup. This will help us to get a good feel for your hair and if the look you desire will work for your hair type. It also gives us a chance to discover if any extensions will be needed, and if your chosen hair pieces, accessories, and veil will work, leaving you plenty of time to order or exchange anything that isn’t working.

What if I’m not sure of how to wear my hair for my wedding?

Your meeting and your trial are opportunities to ask for advice and suggestions. We have an updated portfolio here on our website, along with a printed portfolio in the salon. We also have a great guide in the salon that gives suggestions on how to wear your hair depending on your dress style and neckline. You can also take some time to gather inspiring photos online and you can email them to us. Once you sign your contract with us, we make a folder just for you and your wedding, saving your contract and all important information that we need to be prepared for your big day. Any images you email to us are printed and put in your file.

How long before my wedding day should I book my trial?IMG_4729-L

We recommend approximately 2 months before your wedding day. This gives you plenty of time after your trial to order any necessary accessories, book your other appointments including touch-ups, highlights, waxing, etc.

How long before my wedding day should I have other services done?

For color, highlights and trims, we recommend 1-2 weeks. This will ensure that your color is fresh for the big day, while leaving any time needed for emergencies or color changes. For waxing services we recommend 5-7 days, which lets your skin be fresh and smooth for the day of, while ensuring that any redness or swelling has time to go away. For GelMani’s, you can have this service done the day of, or within 5-7 days.

Why are ala-carte options not available for on-location weddings?

Doing on-location weddings requires a lot of time and planning to make sure we are fully prepared with everything needed for all of the services. Some services are just not available out of the salon due to the amount of products and equipment needed, like the GelMani. We are also taking time out of a normal work day to leave the salon and our regular clients in order to travel to your location. The amount of services booked needs to compare with what can be made by working in the salon for a day. There are just too many variables with ala-carte services, and it is much easier to be organized and prepared when we know exactly what we are doing the day of your wedding!

Do I have to wear my hair up on my wedding day?

No, you can wear your hair in any style that suits you and your wedding. Most brides and bridesmaids prefer to wear their hair up so they look more formal, and they don’t have to worry about “messing” with their hair for the entire day and night. Keep in mind what the weather is going to be like on your wedding day, and how well your hair will cooperate with the weather. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, wearing your hair down runs the risk of having it blow around during your vows if it’s windy. You also risk things like humidity wearing down your curls, causing frizz, or falling flat. These are all important things to consider when choosing your hairstyle. We will give recommendations based on your wedding date, hair type, and typical weather patterns during the different seasons.

How should I have my skin and hair prepared for my big day?

Arrive to the salon or to your location with clean, dry skin, wearing only your usual moisturizer.

Top 10 Ways to Wear Pixie Cuts!

pixie cuts

Nearly every woman has had, or has thought about, chopping it all off and getting a pixie cut! Who wouldn’t love the freedom and ease that comes with these low-maintenance styles? We’ve seen them take over the red carpet in recent years and we absolutely love how chic and modern they make those Hollywood starlets look, including Pamela Anderson and Kristin Chenoweth! In honor of our upcoming Locks of Love campaign on March 8th, we are dedicating this blog to the pixie cut in hopes of perhaps inspiring some of our lovely clients to take it all off and celebrate the pixie! No matter what age, face shape, body type, or personal style, every woman can wear a short cut! Here are our Top 10 Ways to Wear Pixie Cuts!

10. Swept Back
This swept back style is one of the most classic ways to wear a short cut. It only requires a few minutes of effort and can look super polished and even formal with the right products! All hair types can get this look, even super the super fine!

Get the Look: Start with some Bb Thickening Hairspray evenly sprayed all over, or for more hold, use Styling Creme. Blowdry with a classic Denman or vent brush from front to back, just adding slight bend at the ends until dry. Finish with Does it All Spray for a soft natural hold.

9. Mature & Classic
No matter what your age a pixie cut can definitely work for you! Make sure you show a bit of your personality with your hair, and choose a more modern shape, rather than those old-fashioned round short crops! These women always look simply amazing with their coveted short pixie cuts!

Get the Look: Start with some Bb Styling Lotion evenly sprayed all over. Blowdry with a small round brush, or simply using your fingers to set the hair in the desired direction. Finish with Spray de Mode if you like more hold.

8. Naturally Curly
If your hair is naturally curly consider yourself perfectly lucky! With a great pixie cut tailored specifically to your texture you can have it made with a truly wash and go style! Or you can blow dry to loosen up your natural texture a bit and go for a slightly undone effect! If your hair is coarse or on the dry side, make sure you use a great moisturizing shampoo and do a treatment once a week!

Get the Look: For fine hair with soft curls, apply a dime size of Bb Curl Conscious Defining Creme & you’re on your way! For coarse hair with tight curls, switch to the Curl Conscious Calming Creme. For a more undone but still polished natural curl, we love a drop of Brilliantine! Oh and don’t bother washing the next day! Sleep with a satin pillow case to keep your style fresh and reawaken your curls the next day with a spritz of Reactivating Mist or Tonic Lotion!

7. The Side Part
This style has been admired and favored ever since the iconic Twiggy made it so chic and famous in the 1960’s and it is still copied today! This is not only a classic way to wear a pixie cut, but it can also be a great way to grow out a pixie, add a sleek polished look, or simply to keep your hair out of your face!

Get the Look: This couldn’t be easier! With damp hair, apply a small amount of Bb Gel, Brilliantine or Semisumo. Use a comb to make a straight side part, and slick over. Dry if you must or just go!

6. The Faux Hawk
This style has actually been around since the late 70’s/early 80’s when the original punk movement made its mark and has reemerged every few years since then when another celebrity gets brave or rebellious and goes for it! It never truly goes out of style and is now considered a classic cut for both men and women alike! Whether you decide to go for the full on mohawk, long or short, or for the softer faux hawk at any length, there really is a version of the cut out there for almost everyone! Pink has been wearing different versions of the faux hawk for many years, and it has made a comeback thanks to Miley.

Get the Look: Waxes are indispensable when it comes to styling your faux hawk. For extra hold, start with Styling Creme or Bb Gel when hair is damp and blowdry all the hair forward and towards the middle. When dry, rub a small amount of desired wax throughout hands and “piece” your style into place. For a softer and shinier finish use Sumowax, or for a messier matte look, use Sumotech. The next day it looks even better! Just spritz on a bit on Tonic Lotion to reactivate product!

5. Messy Pixie
The artfully disheveled, or undone but done, or simple messy pixie is the easiest and most maintenance-free way to enjoy a great pixie cut. Don’t try too hard, just let it be. The next day let it be even more. Maybe go for a third day. Do whatever your mood tells you to do. Or don’t. Then throw on some lipstick in Pantone’s Color of the Year- Radiant Orchid. Yes, life really can be that easy and you’ll still look amazing!

Get the Look: Start with Grooming Creme. If you feel like it, blowdry hair all forward. Finish with Sumowax, Sumotech, or Semisumo and push bangs to the side or piece them out. The next day spritz a little Tonic or Prep on it to reactivate the product. Spike it up, piece it out, do whatever the mood strikes.

4. Long Bangs
A short pixie with long bangs is perhaps the best of both worlds. You get the freedom of having short hair with the security of having those long bangs to give you ultra versatility and the comfort of still having some longer hair. Spend 5-10 minutes styling your hair in any of the other ways mentioned, or mess up the back and sweep those long bangs across to the other side for an uber-modern style!

Get the Look: Styling Creme or Grooming Creme are both great multi-use products that go well with this versatile pixie. Both are great if you just want to wash and go. Styling Creme is a great volumizer when heat-activated if you want some height in the crown area before sweeping the bangs over. Grooming Creme gives light hold with great separation no matter how you wear it.

3. Shaved Undercut
Those amazing half-shaved styles have been gaining some real popularity among celebrities and even our normally conservative clients alike! They’re actually considered an undercut and they’ve been around the salon circuit for quite some time. We’re loving the new rise in popularity of these styles and since our clients are becoming a bit more brave, we’re having so many more options to give you amazing haircuts! The best part? In a few weeks you’ll have a regular pixie cut because these styles grow out very quickly!

Get the Look: Are you a product minimalist? All you need is the right shampoo and Grooming Creme. Apply when damp, dry or don’t.

2. Shaggy Pixie Cut
Edie Sedgwick made the shaggy pixie a classic and modern cut during her days as Andy Warhol’s muse, and the style is still seen everywhere! Whether getting a longer shaggy pixie cut, or letting a shorter pixie grow out, the shaggy pixie is our runner-up to the top spot! This version is super versatile with endless options for styling, and works great with every hair texture. Just keep getting those trims every 4-6 weeks to make sure you don’t grow a mullet! This cut looks great blown out straight, flat ironed stick straight, slicked over to the side, or just worn really messy. There are also a ton of amazing hair accessories that you don’t want to miss out on including headbands, cute barrettes, and scarves tied into a bow on top!

Get the Look: Start with Tonic Lotion, spraying evenly throughout. Add a dime size of Texture Creme, working through damp hair. Blowdry with a vent brush or a medium round brush to flip ends under and direct hair forward. Add a bit more Texture, or use Thickening Contour Creme to piece out ends. Add a great headband to accessorize and finish the look.
