We have an amazing Prom Hair & Makeup package for $75!!!

It’s Classic for a Reason!
When in doubt, stick with the classics! A classic smoky eye, a classic red lip, a classic black dress, a classic bun- all classics that never go out of style!

Choose your dress first!
Your dress style, color, and neckline will all determine how you should wear your hair and makeup! This is the important first step. If the bodice of your dress has lots of beading or an intricate pattern, you don’t want to wear long loose curls that will cover it up! The same goes for a high neckline. You’ll want to wear your hair all up in a pretty updo. If your dress is a one-shoulder design, you’ll want to wear your hair up, or swept over to the other side. Your makeup color will also be determined by the color of your dress. A classic red lip would clash with that bright pink or pastel green dress!

If you’re unsure of how to wear your hair, don’t worry! We have a book in our waiting area that has a great guideline of what hairstyles work best with different types of dresses! Bring a picture of your dress and your stylist can help you find a style that will be perfect for you!

What’s Old is New Again!
You can never go wrong when you go vintage! Find your inner flapper or pinup girl and stand out in the crowd! Head Candy stylists have tons of experience with vintage styling from every decade of the past. We can even give you a modern version of a vintage look! From the fingerwaves and sharp bobs of the roaring 20’s, to the soft elegance of the 30’s and 40’s, to the classic pinup girl of the 50’s, Head Candy is your go-to place for vintage style! We also have an entire book devoted to these amazing favorites!

Radiant Orchid
Pantone’s Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid and we are in love with this color! Whether you have a dress in this color, or you want to play up your eyes or your lips in this color, Radiant Orchid is the color of the year for good reason! It is such a beautiful bright shade and can be made to suit every girl for prom!

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not sure of how to wear my hair for my prom?

We have a great guide in the salon that gives suggestions on how to wear your hair depending on your dress style and neckline. You can also take some time to gather inspiring photos online and bring them to your appointment! Be sure to bring a picture of your dress too!

How far in advance should I book my appointment?

ASAP!! Most proms fall on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, which are the busiest days in the salon. Our early afternoon and evening spots book up very quickly, especially during the busy prom and wedding season! As soon as you know what time you’ll need to be ready, book your appointment! Don’t forget to give yourself extra time to go home and get a shower, get in your dress, and get your pictures taken by your adoring family and friends!

How long before my prom should I have other services done?

For color, highlights and trims, we recommend 1-2 weeks. This will ensure that your color is fresh for the big day, while leaving any time needed for emergencies or color changes. For waxing services we recommend 5-7 days, which lets your skin be fresh and smooth for the day of, while ensuring that any redness or swelling has time to go away. For GelMani’s, you can have this service done the day of, or within 5-7 days.

Do I have to wear my hair up for my prom?

No, you can wear your hair in any style that suits you and your dress. Most girls prefer to wear their hair up so they look more formal, and they don’t have to worry about “messing” with their hair for the entire day and night. Keep in mind what the weather is going to be like, and how well your hair will cooperate with the weather. Also think about things like humidity or how lots of dancing could wear down your curls, causing frizz, or falling flat. These are all important things to consider when choosing your hairstyle. We will give recommendations based on your prom date, hair type, and typical weather patterns during the different seasons.

How should I have my skin and hair prepared for my appointment?

Arrive to the salon with clean, dry skin, wearing only your usual moisturizer. Please make sure you have removed all remnants of makeup from the day before and don’t wear any foundation, mascara, or concealers. Please also arrive with clean, dry hair. If your hair needs to be blown out straight for your updo, please either arrive with it blown out or include a blowout when booking your appointment. Blowouts are not included with updos, so be prepared to do this yourself, or to pay extra for a blowout the day of. DO NOT arrive with dirty hair and DO NOT put any products in your hair. It is a huge myth that dirty hair works best for updos! We don’t know what products you are using at home and most non-professional products are just not made for layering or for excessive brushing and styling. Having products left in the hair runs the risk of causing flakes the next day which look terrible when trying to achieve a beautiful updo. Please arrive with clean, dry hair! And don’t forget a button or zip up top!

Have any other questions? Feel free to give us a call and we will happily answer them for you!

Spring Collection 2014

Welcome to Head Candy’s first full collection for Spring 2014!

Our entire staff got together in January for a full day of makeovers to present our favorite cuts, colors, and styles for Spring. We assembled into 4 teams and each team chose a candy as inspiration for the looks. It was an amazing day full of hard work, team building, creativity, and a showcase of the awesome talent that works here at Head Candy. We also wanted to give a big thanks to Chrissi, who did all of the makeup for every model in our photo shoot! We truly hope you enjoy our portfolio as much as we enjoyed assembling it for you!

Team Butterscotch features the work of Kristin and Payal. For their color makeover, they lightened the model to a pale blonde and added lowlights in soft butterscotch and golden tones for depth and dimension. They finished with her cut by transforming it into a trendy short pixie with plenty of textureJanet Makeover! For their men’s look they did a super short classic fade with a defined side part, which is right on trend for 2014! It has a hint of that great vintage look that’s highly requested in the salon right now. The Butterscotch updo is their version of an updated 1940’s look with classic pin curls and Victory Rolls to coordinate with her adorable polka-dot dress! Nice job Payal & Kristin!

Candy Barcandybar2

The Candy Bar team features Alexis, Christina & Melissa. For their color makeover, they added slices of caramel highlights with great placement to really stand out when the hair is parted to the side. They also added a beautiful new chocolate base color to the hair adding amazing shine and rich dimension. They also styled her into a classic updo for the finished look, with a few soft tendrils to frame her face. Candy Bar Makeover For their men’s look they prelightened his mohawk section, toning it to a rich caramel color to really make it stand out against his natural dark base color. Bumble’s Sumotech was used to finish the style into a textured short faux hawk!

Team Nerds features the work of John and Rachel. For their color makeover, they lightened the model to a pale blonde and added multiple colors of highlights in lots of candy colors. They also gave her a new shorter classic bob cut with lots of soft layers for movement. For the men’s cut they used the model’s natural texture to add the height they wanted, while cleaning up the sides and nape to a short clipper cut, keeping him groomed and polished. Nerds makeover Their updo is an oh-so-cute side bun with lots of pin-curls and a side swept bang in a super nerdy girl fashion. And let’s not forget the glasses and suspenders for nerd prowess!

Cotton Candycottoncandy1

Team Cotton Candy features the work of Robin and Tronisha. They loved the idea of choosing Cotton Candy to feature the exaggerated texture they could get with natural curly hair, while having the opportunity to use lots of the soft pastel and candy colors that are so trendy right now in the salon, and all over the world!

For Robin’s first color makeover on Jess, the entire head was prelightened to pale blonde. Jess makeoverShe then added slices going around the head in pinks, purples, candy greens, and blues. The roots were toned to a lavendar, while the midlengths and ends were toned to a pale blonde with a hint of lavendar. She then gave Jess ultra-chic blunt bangs and a new bob, with a few long tendrils hanging over for interest.

For Tronisha’s color makeover on Gabby, she Gab makeoverprelightened her existing dark roots, pulling the lightener through the rest of the hair for the last few minutes of processing time in order to get rid of the unwanted brassy yellow tones. She then weaved different shades of purples, blues, and slate grays through her new bangs, while toning the rest of the hair to a soft pale blonde with a subtle hint of violet. She played with different textures on her styling, giving her smooth and sleek bangs with full blown out volume on the rest!

For Robin’s second color makeover, she prelightened a circular section with asymmetrical Emily makeoverplacement on the top of Emily’s head. She then added a ton of slices in various shades of fuschia, red, purple, pink, and blue, throughout the prelightened circle. The remaining hair was colored to a new deep red-plum base. Emily got a great classic Bumble blowout for those big bouncy curls that last for days!   The Cotton Candy Men’s cut features Alex from 12 oz Studios.

For his first style Robin picked out his natural fro to amazing height! After that he was shampooed, and Bumble and Bumble’s Curl Conscious Calming Creme was applied after the hair was sprayed with Tonic Spray! Curly hair has plenty of styling options and his hair shows it off perfectly!

Will I get a full hair consultation?headpiece

All of our packages include a full bridal trial, including hair and makeup. This will help us to get a good feel for your hair and if the look you desire will work for your hair type. It also gives us a chance to discover if any extensions will be needed, and if your chosen hair pieces, accessories, and veil will work, leaving you plenty of time to order or exchange anything that isn’t working.

What if I’m not sure of how to wear my hair for my wedding?

Your meeting and your trial are opportunities to ask for advice and suggestions. We have an updated portfolio here on our website, along with a printed portfolio in the salon. We also have a great guide in the salon that gives suggestions on how to wear your hair depending on your dress style and neckline. You can also take some time to gather inspiring photos online and you can email them to us. Once you sign your contract with us, we make a folder just for you and your wedding, saving your contract and all important information that we need to be prepared for your big day. Any images you email to us are printed and put in your file.

How long before my wedding day should I book my trial?IMG_4729-L

We recommend approximately 2 months before your wedding day. This gives you plenty of time after your trial to order any necessary accessories, book your other appointments including touch-ups, highlights, waxing, etc.

How long before my wedding day should I have other services done?

For color, highlights and trims, we recommend 1-2 weeks. This will ensure that your color is fresh for the big day, while leaving any time needed for emergencies or color changes. For waxing services we recommend 5-7 days, which lets your skin be fresh and smooth for the day of, while ensuring that any redness or swelling has time to go away. For GelMani’s, you can have this service done the day of, or within 5-7 days.

Why are ala-carte options not available for on-location weddings?

Doing on-location weddings requires a lot of time and planning to make sure we are fully prepared with everything needed for all of the services. Some services are just not available out of the salon due to the amount of products and equipment needed, like the GelMani. We are also taking time out of a normal work day to leave the salon and our regular clients in order to travel to your location. The amount of services booked needs to compare with what can be made by working in the salon for a day. There are just too many variables with ala-carte services, and it is much easier to be organized and prepared when we know exactly what we are doing the day of your wedding!

Do I have to wear my hair up on my wedding day?

No, you can wear your hair in any style that suits you and your wedding. Most brides and bridesmaids prefer to wear their hair up so they look more formal, and they don’t have to worry about “messing” with their hair for the entire day and night. Keep in mind what the weather is going to be like on your wedding day, and how well your hair will cooperate with the weather. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, wearing your hair down runs the risk of having it blow around during your vows if it’s windy. You also risk things like humidity wearing down your curls, causing frizz, or falling flat. These are all important things to consider when choosing your hairstyle. We will give recommendations based on your wedding date, hair type, and typical weather patterns during the different seasons.

How should I have my skin and hair prepared for my big day?

Arrive to the salon or to your location with clean, dry skin, wearing only your usual moisturizer.

The Hottest Hair Color Trends

Been thinking about a change in hair color for Winter? The best new hair colors are jenanistonmulti-tonal and can be low in maintenance but high impact even with just a subtle change! All of the looks are totally customizable and unique to the individual!

Bronde Baby!
The perfect combination of blonde and brown hues, bronde is perfect for those blonde clients who are tired of the “bleach blonde” look and desire a darker shade of blonde with more dimensional highlights. It can also look great on dark hair clients who want to try out a lighter color!

Bronde is our favorite way to add gisellemore interest and dimension to our overly lightened blonde clients and is an amazing way to get the best of both worlds! You can still have those light blonde pieces you crave around your face & the top of your hair, while still maintaining a base color closer to your natural color. Celebrities that are making Bronde hot right now… Jennifer Aniston, Giselle & Nicole Richie!

Hot tips for getting the bronde look-nicolerichie

  • You can gradually go darker by adding some lowlights with your next touch-up

Chocolate Brown with Golden Caramel Highlights!

Never fear, you have tons of beautiful choices no matter what shade of brown you are!

How about adding some thin ribbons of warm golden or caramel highlights to your natural color. You can even add jenlthese in the interior of your hair, away from the roots to create interest without worrying about the maintenance of a typical highlight.

Top 10 Ways to Wear Pixie Cuts!

pixie cuts

Nearly every woman has had, or has thought about, chopping it all off and getting a pixie cut! Who wouldn’t love the freedom and ease that comes with these low-maintenance styles? We’ve seen them take over the red carpet in recent years and we absolutely love how chic and modern they make those Hollywood starlets look, including Pamela Anderson and Kristin Chenoweth! In honor of our upcoming Locks of Love campaign on March 8th, we are dedicating this blog to the pixie cut in hopes of perhaps inspiring some of our lovely clients to take it all off and celebrate the pixie! No matter what age, face shape, body type, or personal style, every woman can wear a short cut! Here are our Top 10 Ways to Wear Pixie Cuts!

10. Swept Back
This swept back style is one of the most classic ways to wear a short cut. It only requires a few minutes of effort and can look super polished and even formal with the right products! All hair types can get this look, even super the super fine!

Get the Look: Start with some Bb Thickening Hairspray evenly sprayed all over, or for more hold, use Styling Creme. Blowdry with a classic Denman or vent brush from front to back, just adding slight bend at the ends until dry. Finish with Does it All Spray for a soft natural hold.

9. Mature & Classic
No matter what your age a pixie cut can definitely work for you! Make sure you show a bit of your personality with your hair, and choose a more modern shape, rather than those old-fashioned round short crops! These women always look simply amazing with their coveted short pixie cuts!

Get the Look: Start with some Bb Styling Lotion evenly sprayed all over. Blowdry with a small round brush, or simply using your fingers to set the hair in the desired direction. Finish with Spray de Mode if you like more hold.

8. Naturally Curly
If your hair is naturally curly consider yourself perfectly lucky! With a great pixie cut tailored specifically to your texture you can have it made with a truly wash and go style! Or you can blow dry to loosen up your natural texture a bit and go for a slightly undone effect! If your hair is coarse or on the dry side, make sure you use a great moisturizing shampoo and do a treatment once a week!

Get the Look: For fine hair with soft curls, apply a dime size of Bb Curl Conscious Defining Creme & you’re on your way! For coarse hair with tight curls, switch to the Curl Conscious Calming Creme. For a more undone but still polished natural curl, we love a drop of Brilliantine! Oh and don’t bother washing the next day! Sleep with a satin pillow case to keep your style fresh and reawaken your curls the next day with a spritz of Reactivating Mist or Tonic Lotion!

7. The Side Part
This style has been admired and favored ever since the iconic Twiggy made it so chic and famous in the 1960’s and it is still copied today! This is not only a classic way to wear a pixie cut, but it can also be a great way to grow out a pixie, add a sleek polished look, or simply to keep your hair out of your face!

Get the Look: This couldn’t be easier! With damp hair, apply a small amount of Bb Gel, Brilliantine or Semisumo. Use a comb to make a straight side part, and slick over. Dry if you must or just go!

6. The Faux Hawk
This style has actually been around since the late 70’s/early 80’s when the original punk movement made its mark and has reemerged every few years since then when another celebrity gets brave or rebellious and goes for it! It never truly goes out of style and is now considered a classic cut for both men and women alike! Whether you decide to go for the full on mohawk, long or short, or for the softer faux hawk at any length, there really is a version of the cut out there for almost everyone! Pink has been wearing different versions of the faux hawk for many years, and it has made a comeback thanks to Miley.

Get the Look: Waxes are indispensable when it comes to styling your faux hawk. For extra hold, start with Styling Creme or Bb Gel when hair is damp and blowdry all the hair forward and towards the middle. When dry, rub a small amount of desired wax throughout hands and “piece” your style into place. For a softer and shinier finish use Sumowax, or for a messier matte look, use Sumotech. The next day it looks even better! Just spritz on a bit on Tonic Lotion to reactivate product!

5. Messy Pixie
The artfully disheveled, or undone but done, or simple messy pixie is the easiest and most maintenance-free way to enjoy a great pixie cut. Don’t try too hard, just let it be. The next day let it be even more. Maybe go for a third day. Do whatever your mood tells you to do. Or don’t. Then throw on some lipstick in Pantone’s Color of the Year- Radiant Orchid. Yes, life really can be that easy and you’ll still look amazing!

Get the Look: Start with Grooming Creme. If you feel like it, blowdry hair all forward. Finish with Sumowax, Sumotech, or Semisumo and push bangs to the side or piece them out. The next day spritz a little Tonic or Prep on it to reactivate the product. Spike it up, piece it out, do whatever the mood strikes.

4. Long Bangs
A short pixie with long bangs is perhaps the best of both worlds. You get the freedom of having short hair with the security of having those long bangs to give you ultra versatility and the comfort of still having some longer hair. Spend 5-10 minutes styling your hair in any of the other ways mentioned, or mess up the back and sweep those long bangs across to the other side for an uber-modern style!

Get the Look: Styling Creme or Grooming Creme are both great multi-use products that go well with this versatile pixie. Both are great if you just want to wash and go. Styling Creme is a great volumizer when heat-activated if you want some height in the crown area before sweeping the bangs over. Grooming Creme gives light hold with great separation no matter how you wear it.

3. Shaved Undercut
Those amazing half-shaved styles have been gaining some real popularity among celebrities and even our normally conservative clients alike! They’re actually considered an undercut and they’ve been around the salon circuit for quite some time. We’re loving the new rise in popularity of these styles and since our clients are becoming a bit more brave, we’re having so many more options to give you amazing haircuts! The best part? In a few weeks you’ll have a regular pixie cut because these styles grow out very quickly!

Get the Look: Are you a product minimalist? All you need is the right shampoo and Grooming Creme. Apply when damp, dry or don’t.

2. Shaggy Pixie Cut
Edie Sedgwick made the shaggy pixie a classic and modern cut during her days as Andy Warhol’s muse, and the style is still seen everywhere! Whether getting a longer shaggy pixie cut, or letting a shorter pixie grow out, the shaggy pixie is our runner-up to the top spot! This version is super versatile with endless options for styling, and works great with every hair texture. Just keep getting those trims every 4-6 weeks to make sure you don’t grow a mullet! This cut looks great blown out straight, flat ironed stick straight, slicked over to the side, or just worn really messy. There are also a ton of amazing hair accessories that you don’t want to miss out on including headbands, cute barrettes, and scarves tied into a bow on top!

Get the Look: Start with Tonic Lotion, spraying evenly throughout. Add a dime size of Texture Creme, working through damp hair. Blowdry with a vent brush or a medium round brush to flip ends under and direct hair forward. Add a bit more Texture, or use Thickening Contour Creme to piece out ends. Add a great headband to accessorize and finish the look.

disadvantaged children with medical hair loss. Most recipients have lost their hair due to an auto-immune condition known
as alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns, radiation treatment, or any number
of dermatological conditions resulting in long term or permanent hair loss.

The custom-made, vacuum fitted hairpieces we provide don’t require tape or glue. Instead, they fit like a suction
cup, displacing air underneath to create a vacuum seal. Approximately 150,000 hairs are injected by hand into the silicone base, all of them from donated ponytails (about six to ten). Each hairpiece takes four months to complete and is designed for those with a complete loss of scalp hair.

Locks of Love meets a unique need that goes beyond superficial beauty. The children wearing these hairpieces have
lost more than their hair; they suffer from a loss of self. We hope to help provide a foundation on which children can
rebuild their self esteem, and regain the normalcy in their everyday lives that the rest of us take for granted.

Our organization relies on financial contributions from the general public and from private foundations
to help cover program costs.

Eyebrow Matters

Your eyebrows are one of the most important focal features of your face so we’re devoting a blog entirely to this topic! We’re including some eyebrow do’s and don’ts, some examples of eyebrows gone bad, some eyebrow before and after makeovers, and some expert tips for getting and maintaining your perfect eyebrows! We’ve even included some advice for men’s eyebrows too! And just to show you how serious we are about helping you with your eyebrow matters, we will be offering a free eyebrow shaping, waxing, or threading for the entire month of February with Chrissi or Payal!

We’ve all seen our fair share of bad eyebrows; too thick, too thin, too dark, too high, too joey2low, barely there, and the list goes on. Unfortunately, many of us have experienced bad eyebrows ourselves. That time when you ran into that cheap place around the corner and walked out with a big gap or even worse, a burn! Oh and let’s not forget that hilarious episode of Friends when Joey decided to try out some waxing and ended up looking, well, you remember!

Poor Joey, taking the advice of his agent, is the perfect example of eyebrows gone terribly wrong!
First, let’s talk about bad eyebrows. Back in the 1920’s and 30’s, the super-thin, overly high arches were the style, but modern times call for a more natural brow. Your face shape is going to help determine the shape of your eyebrows but you don’t want to stray too far away from your natural thickness and natural arch. Its all about emphasizing your natural beauty and features. Square face shapes can round the brow arch slightly to soften features, and a round face can go slightly higher with the arch to add length. Small changes to natural shapes are perfectly fine, but should be left to the professionals.

Here’s a list of 3 Eyebrow Don’ts:

1. Don’t Over Pluck!bad2
Step away from the tweezers! Overplucking is one of the biggest mistakes you can make with your brows. As you age your brows tend to thin out, making it even more difficult to grow back those gaps in your brow shape. Leave the original shaping to the pro and just clean up around the outside as needed in-between visits. (As you can see with the image to the right, overplucking can result in gaps or holes in the brow line, or can leave them too thin.)

2. Don’t spread your brows too far apart.bad1
Having too much space in-between your brows can make your nose look wider and your eyes look smaller. Don’t tweeze any wider than the bridge of your nose. Just clean up the very center as needed. (This image shows what can happen when you tweeze the center past the natural bridge of the nose. The eyebrows are too far apart, making the face look more round and the eyes look small and further apart. They’re also way too high, giving a very unflattering shape.)

3. Don’t tweeze into your natural brow shape!bad3
Stick with removing the hair that is further away from the brow. It gets too easy to make mistakes when you start removing hair from the actual brow- just tweezing out one hair too many can ruin your shape. (Tweezing too much into the natural brow shape has turned both of these brows too thin. The image on the top shows how overplucking has left her with hardly any brows left, and a bad attempt at filling them in. The image on the bottom shows that overplucking has left her with almost no eyebrows, and filling in just a thin line gives a very unnatural appearance.)

Here’s a List of 3 Eyebrow Do’s:

1. Do grow them out and come see our eyebrow gurus!
If you’re unhappy with your current brow shape, just stick to cleaning up the very outside while letting them grow in for a few weeks. Head Candy has 2 amazing eyebrow gurus that can give you an eyebrow makeover! Giving them a little more to work with gives you more opportunity to have your best eyebrows!

2. Do invest in a great brow kit if you have gaps or your brows are too thintoofaced
The first step in getting great brows is learning how to find an amazing shape that goes with your natural brows. When you come in to see our eyebrow guru Chrissi, filling-in is the first step she takes in shaping your brows. She then cleans up around the newly shaped arch. This can help you maintain your new perfect brows at home and will help keep you from overdoing it. We use and highly recommend the brow kit “Brow Envy” from Too Faced which comes with everything you need and you can pick it up at Sephora! Chrissi will even give you a lesson on filling them in at home!

3. Do Learn the Perfectly Shaped Browhow-to1
The front of the brow should line up with the upper bridge of your nose. The arch should be approximately three-quarters of the way back from the bridge of your nose. Then the tail of the brow should taper off, getting thinner, following the shape of the eye. Both brows should be pretty symmetrical and look like mirror images of each other. No two brows look perfectly alike, but they should match each other in both size and shape as close as possible. (The picture shows how to find a great shape for your natural eyebrows. We highly recommend leaving the shaping to a pro, and just maintaining the look at home, filling them in by following the picture!)

Men’s Eyebrow Groominggm
Men sometimes need their brows groomed too but you need to be especially careful not to remove too much hair, like the picture of Joey shown above! Men can get away with just a simple clean up, usually involving a small amount of trimming, and maybe just tweezing or threading a few strays away. If you comb your eyebrow hairs up and they go above your brow line, you can definitely use a little trim. If you have a unibrow or have brows as thick as Groucho Marx, then perhaps you should stop in and get those little beasts cleaned up! We don’t recommend men getting their eyebrows waxed, so threading or tweezing would be your best bet! Please don’t try this at home, especially if you have zero experience in this area. Just ask for a quick clean up at your next haircut appointment!

Guys need to pay attention to their brows too. We recommend tweezing or threading for men’s brows, along with a little trimming if needed. Just don’t over-do it. Leave this to the pros!

Or, if you have very sensitive skin, have had a bad experience with waxing, or use skin makeover3peels, Retin-A, Accutane, or products that treat acne, come see Payal, our Eyebrow Threading Expert with over 12 years of threading experience! (The image to the right shows how anyone can get an amazing brow shape that still looks natural, by just cleaning up a few strays and following the perfect brow guide! These brows are done with threading!)

The image to the right shows an amazing eyebrow makeover, by first filling in a more makeover2natural brow shape and just cleaning up around them. These brows will need several months to grow back in before matching the new beautiful shape, and a great brow kit helps them look this perfect! Of course some gorgeous makeup and lashes add to the beauty even more but the eyebrows make the biggest impact!

Curly Hair!

We get a ton of requests asking for more information on curly hair including how to style curly hair, what products to use for different types of curly hair, how to reduce frizz, and how to tame unruly curls. Help for curly hair is in such high-demand and we are dedicating this post entirely to curls curls CURLS!!

We’re also working on a few videos to add to our YouTube channel so be sure to head on over there to get some great tutorials on curly hair styles!

The Cut
The first step to getting a great look for curly hair is to get the right cut. This step is essential in getting the right shape for your specific type of curls. Many women with long curly hair complain that it tends to fall flat and straight on top, while having a lot of curl towards the ends, giving an unflattering triangle shape. This can easily be remedied by having a great cut with proper layers to help remove weight from the bottom, allowing the root area to not be dragged down. Some curly types may need to be cut when the hair is dry to see how it lays naturally. Each type of curl is unique to the individual client, and this dictates the type of cut that is needed. No 2 heads of curls are exactly alike, and no 2 heads of curls should be cut the same way. Once you have a great cut you’ll need to invest in the right products for your hair and curl type.

The Products…
Having the right products, designed to moisturize, protect, and accentuate curly hair are imperative to getting the desired result. Not every head of curly hair is the same and neither is every curly hair product! African-American hair may tend to be more curly and dry compared to hair of other ethnicity’s. Because the curl pattern is tighter, it can prevent the natural oils of the scalp from flowing down the hair strand to moisturize at the ends. If possible, try not to shampoo your hair more than once per week for this type of hair.

Here is a breakdown of several amazing products meant to bring out the best in your curls!

Choosing the right shampoo for your hair type and curl type is a big part of ensuring that you retain the right moisture balance in your hair. You don’t want to use any harsh cleansers that strip the hair of natural oils. We strongly suggest not washing your hair more than a few times per week regardless of the shampoo you’re using. These are the 3 shampoos we recommend for curly hair.

Curl Conscious Smoothing Shampoo: $23smoothingshampoo23
This is an ultra gentle shampoo that helps to smooth and tame curls, add shine, and control frizz. It contains Transglutaminase, which helps to form curl-enhancing bonds, that give shapely, soft curls. It also contains an exclusive moisture complex and glycerin, which help to promote the absorption of moisture, locking it into the hair. This is the shampoo for all types of textures and curls with no guesswork needed.

Color Minded Sulfate-Free Shampoo: $29colorminded_shampoo_large
If you have curly hair that is also color-treated, the Color Minded shampoo is also a worthy option. Sulfate-free cleansing helps prevent color washout while revealing lustre. This is an ultra-mild cleanser that protects and prolongs color, while adding mild conditioning. It contains a few long words (Polyquaternium-7, Polyquaternium-10, Phenyl Trimethicone) that are used to condition and help with ease of combing, along with a combination of methicones to lock in color. Highly recommended for our brightly colored curly clients.

Creme de Coco Shampoo: $24cocosh
This is a super rich, luxurious shampoo perfect for curly hair that craves extra moisture. It’s extra-mild, with a blend of moisture-rich Coconut and Murumuru Butters to help restore sheen & softness, improve flexibility and minimize frizz. Contains Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil & Extract and Palm Tree Butter to add moisture and shine, Milk Thistle Extract to protect, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch to restore elasticity, body and moisture. If your curls seem to be super dry and frizzy, we highly recommend this amazing shampoo!

Curly hair loves conditioner and seems like it just can’t get enough! The problem for a lot of clients with curly hair is that you may be afraid of conditioner if you have flat or limp, lazy curls, or fine hair. You get a great curl pattern on the midlengths and ends, but it falls flat on top. That doesn’t mean you can’t use a conditioner, or that you can only use light conditioners. That problem is easily solved with the right conditioner, the right cut, along with styling products and techniques. These are our picks for curly conditioners and masques.

Curl Conscious Conditioner: $24smoothingconditioner24
This conditioner is perfect for most curls! It has a nice amount of moisturizers that turn tangles into tendrils, yet isn’t too heavy, and has curl-enhancing ingredients, making it the perfect curly conditioner. The conditioner also has Transglutaminase, that wonderful ingredient that forms curl-enhancing bonds, and a patented Moisture Complex that includes Glycerin for moisture & water retention, Panthenol/Pro-Vitamin B5 for sheen & manageability, Trehalose to reduce frizz and flyaways, Hyaluranate to regulate humidity, and Polyquaternium-51 that helps to define curls and prevent frizz. When in doubt and not sure exactly which is right for you- all curly heads will love this conditioner!

Creme de Coco Conditioner: $25cococo
A moisture-rich conditioner that softens, adds shine, improves flexibility, and tames frizz. Contains Coconut Oil and Extract to add sheen and moisture, Palm Tree Butter for incredible moisture, Milk Thistle to protect, and Wild Olive Seed Oil to soften. If you need a conditioner with more weight and with as much moisture as possible, this conditioner is a winner. Not for those clients afraid of falling flat!

Extra Helpers

Leave In (Rinse-Out) Conditioner: $24leavein
An amazingly versatile product! Use as a rinse out conditioner or mild detangler, or leave it in hair as a styling aid to moisturize, tame frizz & soften without weighing hair down. Great for all hair types! Rinse out of super fine hair, or work a dab through your hair and stop there for a natural look or give it more structure or texture (or both) with additional products. Contains Vitamin E and Pro-Vitamin B5 for moisture and smoothness. Makes a great base product for very coarse hair types, before using other products, or stands alone for softly defined curls without extra weight.

Curl Conscious Nourishing Masque: $27nourishingmasque27
Give yourself a weekly or monthly conditioning masque to help keep moisture locked in, repair dry hair, and protect. This deep conditioning masque softens texture and helps curls feel fabulous without adding weight. Contains the same great curl-enhancing ingredients as the Curl Conscious shampoo and conditioner, and is the perfect monthly masque for even the finest curls!

Creme de Coco Masque: $27cocom
Your weekly or monthly ultra moisturizing masque. An indulgent masque with a trio of tropical butters which bestows intensive moisture, softness, silkiness and gloss. Contains Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter to restore softness, improve flexibility and minimize frizz, Shea Butter for mega softness, and Mango Butter for tons of moisture. Leave on over night if your hair is super coarse or really thirsty. Not suitable for fine hair.

Now is where the real fun and customization begins! African-American hair can certainly benefit from using the right styling products, but be careful not to use too much. If you only shampoo your hair a few times per week, use any styling products sparingly to prevent product build-up. Also keep in mind that Bumble and Bumble products are really concentrated and a little goes a long way. You can always add more product, so start with a little and add as needed. Wear a silky scarf wrapped around your hair to sleep on those in-between days, it will help keep your hair in great shape for the next day! And don’t forget regular trims to keep those damaged ends away and keep the amazing shape of your curls!

Tonic Lotion: $20 B01J_152x358
Tonic Lotion is our recommended start to curly hair styling. It has a blend of herbs, vitamins and Tea Tree Oil that replaces moisture, soothes, detangles, and enhances the performance of products. Used right out of the shower to detangle and prepare hair for styling, or in-between shampoos to dampen and reactivate products already in hair. Also a great scalp elixer for dry or flaky scalps. This is Step 1 in the styling routine for every curly head!

Curl Conscious Defining Creme: $29definingcream29
This amazing curl creme helps to support soft, fine curls that tend to droop, keeping them shapely and resilient. It keeps the hair moisturized while reducing frizz and flyaways, regulates humidity and improves elasticity. Won’t weigh down your hair & keeps your curls looking bouncy and beautiful!

Curl Conscious Calming Creme: $29calmingcreme29
Smooth, soften and loosen tight curls that tend to frizz, while keeping them tamed and defined (without crunchiness). The perfect curl creme for more coarse hair types that need the extra weight to calm them down and define them without the crunchy feeling of a gel.

Curl Conscious Holding Foam: $28B0X8_152x358
For a bit more hold and defined structure, we love Holding Foam! Keep curls together regardless of heat or humidity with flexible, durable hold. Has great curl retention and memory, while controlling frizz and humidity.

Styling Creme: $25stylingcreme
This is a truly versatile product that can work like a mousse or a gel and was voted as a Best Beauty Buy in 2011 by InStyle Magazine! Love it for its versatility and simple strength – slick back, add body, lift roots or define curl. The more you use, the more it holds – wet or dry. Great for any hair type. Work through damp hair and style; use it with heat (like a mousse) to create manageable volume, or without (like a gel) for control. Reduces static, provides UV protection, retains moisture, and adds body and fullness.

Defrizz: $27defrizz
It does what it says (and more): protects against frizz, acts as a barrier to humidity and leaves hair soft, silky and flyaway-free. Anyone can use this amazing product, it’s good for curls and frizz-prone types. Use on damp hair to define curl and control frizz (blow dry or let dry); on dry hair to add sheen, control flyaways and add movement. Can use in combination with any other products!

Curl Conscious Reactivating Mist: $25reactivatingmist25
Reawaken soft waves or tame hyperactive curls – perfect for mid-morning touchups (and evening revivals). Perfect for all curl types looking to refresh curls throughout the day. Mist anytime throughout the day to tidy and refresh curls (use last when layering with other products). Great for extending the life of your style and extra day or two!

Frequently Asked Hair Questions

Here are some answers to some of the most common questions we get about hair! Have a question that isn’t on this list? Just leave your question in the comment section at the bottom and we will do our best to answer it for you!

Here is our list of the Top Questions and Answers about Hair:

My hair tends to look dull in the winter. How can I liven it up a bit without adding highlights or without anything that requires upkeep?

There are several options to fix this common hair dilemma. First, you can easily enhance your hair’s natural color while adding a great amount of shine and depth with a glaze. Glazes are demi-permanent, deposit-only color that gradually wash out of the hair in 6-8 weeks without leaving a line of demarcation. They don’t require a touch-up, are totally commitment and maintenance-free, and you can match your natural color, add a hint of tonal change, or simply use a clear glaze to just add shine. Another great option is to switch up your products during the winter months, when hair does tend to get more dull and dry. We love and highly recommend Bumble and Bumble “Let it Shine” shampoo and conditioner!

If I’m on a budget and can only afford one- which is more important- buying the expensive shampoo or the conditioner, or do I really need both?

We get this question nearly every day from our clients in the salon and the answer honestly depends on your hair. Hopefully we can help clarify which is the most important for your hair! If you have short or very fine hair, the shampoo is the most important. Typically short hair doesn’t need to be conditioned very often, and fine hair can get away with just a drop of conditioner. If this is you, pick up the full size bottle of the recommended shampoo and buy the travel size conditioner to save some money.

If your hair is color treated, you’ll certainly need to splurge and buy the Color Minded shampoo to help preserve your color. This is especially important if you have any shade of red, any of the bright hair colors that are extremely popular right now, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, or if you know your hair is prone to fading.

If your hair is long, thick, course, or damaged, the conditioner is going to give you the B108_152x358most bang for your buck! Hair that is long, thick, or coarse can certainly benefit from a high-quality conditioner. Hair that is damaged or needs extra repair can use the help of a rinse-out or a leave-in treatment.

Our top recommendation is to simply pick up 1-2 of the most important options for your hair type at each appointment. This will be the easiest and most affordable way to get all of the products that are best for your hair, while stocking up as needed without breaking the bank!

Can wearing my hair up in a ponytail every day really cause my hair to break?

Yes it really can! Frequent super tight ponytails could lead to traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss caused by stress, tension, and regular pulling of the scalp and hair fibers. This type of alopecia can happen to anyone but is more common among women of color who wear their hair pulled tightly in braids, ponytails and extensions. Even parting your hair the same way for a long time can cause the part to widen which is another form of traction alopecia. The same goes for headbands, rollers, and excessive heat. Try using less tension in your ponytail and changing the way you part your hair every few weeks. Always use bands that are covered in fabric and that don’t have hair snagging metal pieces. Scunci makes great ponytail holders that are available everywhere for around $3! You can also use a light silicone spray before you tie that band on, to help your hair glide against the band without snagging. We love the Bumble Let It Shine spray! Just remember- change is good! Learn new ways to style your hair and don’t wear it the same way every day!

How do I protect my hair from heat damage and do those weekly treatments really work?

Two very common questions that we hear all the time! First, it is extremely important to protect your hair from the damaging effects of blowdryers, curling and flat irons. Getting a good lesson in blowdrying your hair may help you to use those irons less often. Another good thing to remember is that you shouldn’t wash your hair every day, meaning you also shouldn’t blowdry and iron it every day. We have tons of amazing Bumble and Bumble products that protect hair from these damaging machines. A few of our faves include Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil, Thickening Hairspray, Spray de Mode, and Does it All.

Chances are if your stylist recommended a deep conditioning treatment, or if your instincts are telling you your hair could use more moisture, then you should probably listen! Deep conditioning treatments pack a powerful punch! They contain very high concentrations of conditioning and hydrating ingredients that penetrate deep into the hair shaft to truly repair those damaged tresses. Most daily formulas stick to the surface of the hair for combability and instant softness but they may not provide long-term benefits. If your hair is just a bit dry, using a treatment weekly will do the trick. If your hair is super damaged or really dried out, try doing a treatment 3 times in the first week, 2 times the second week, and once per week thereafter. Our best recommendation is using a weekly treatment, along with a leave-in treatment to truly repair the damaged hair. Our favorite for heat damage and protection are the Quenching Treatment and the Quenching Complex.

dryspun My hair is oily at the roots, dry at the ends and has no volume. What gives?

We’d guess that you’re washing too frequently. Shampooing every day can strip away your natural oils, causing your sebacious glands to overproduce more oil to make up for it. There are a few simple steps to solving this problem. First, shampoo your hair every other day. It only takes 9 weeks to retrain your oil glands to produce less oil and sacrificing those 9 weeks in the dry winter months will give you great pretlong-range results. Second, use less conditioner, applying only to the ends of your hair, and rinse, rinse, rinse. Third, you are probably using the wrong products. If your hair is falling flat switch to a lighter shampoo and conditioner. Thickening and Seaweed are our 2 all-time best-selling lines for a reason! You are obviously not alone with this problem! And the final tip- DRY SHAMPOO! We have 2 amazing products that can help to add instant lift to the root area without washing away those natural oils! Dryspun Finish or Pret-a-Powder will be your new best friend!

Help! I’m only 26 and am already starting to see gray hair! What can I do to not have to get touch-ups every month?

Over the last decade, we’ve noticed our clients with gray hair are getting younger and younger. There are many easy and no-maintenance ways to deal with those pesky gray hairs! The first is a quick accent highlight. A great colorist can easily blend in those grays and make them look like they are part of a natural highlight! Another great way to blend them away is with a demi glaze. Glazes are one of our most popular services here at Head Candy. They’re affordable and low maintenance, washing out gradually in 6-8 weeks. We also have amazing Bumble hair powders that come in a great selection of colors including white, blondish, brown, and black. They are part dry shampoo and part tinting to help temporarily cover up those grays in-between shampoos!

What can I do about well water? I had beautiful blonde highlights when I left the salon but after a week of washing it at home it started to turn brassy and my stylist said it might be from the well water at my house. Is this true and how can I fix it?

Your stylist is actually correct. Well water can certainly cause brassiness in your haircolor, including when you are at the salon and afterwards at home. This is a very common problem for clients that have well water. Well water contains high mineral content including iron. High levels of iron can turn blonde hair yellowish or reddish, also known as brassiness. High levels of copper in your water can turn hair to a greenish cast. These higher mineral levels can also make it difficult for the coloring process, blocking the color chemicals from penetrating the hair evenly. There are several things you can do to help eliminate these minerals from getting into your hair, and make sure you inform your stylist ahead of time if you have well water at home!

First, invest in a water softening system, or if that is not an option due to the high cost, install a shower head with a filter. These can easily be found at the nearest Lowes or Home Depot and are truly affordable at less than $50.

Second, use a clarifying shampoo before any color service, along with using it once per

A weekly (any day) detox to rid hair of product residue, hard water minerals, pollutants, you name it. Perfect for product junkies and infrequent washers.

week to remove those mineral deposits. We recommend Bumble’s Sunday shampoo which gently clarifies all those minerals out of your hair without causing any damage or stripping away too  much of the hair color. Make sure you remind your stylist at every color visit that you need a clarifying treatment before you begin your color service.

If you do have a water softener, make sure you get the salt labeled “red out”. It is specifically formulated for well water and for removing those staining red deposits.
